Hi folks
I've been thinking about getting a van for years but I've finally put my car on the market and am going to buy a van
I can't decide whether to get an l2 or l3 van.
I wondered if there was anyone near ish to glasgow that would be good enough to show me theirs to help me decide?
Many thanks
Douglas

Welcome!

Not sure what you mean by I2 or I3 and I don’t live near Glasgow, but I’m sure there’ll be someone along in a moment who can help.

Likewise.. But just searched l3 and it seems to be a FORD !!!!!
Better get some good security on it...
Good luck with your search.

I live near Glasgow but I dont know what an L2 or L3 is.

Edit: Just googled it. Its the wheelbase length. L2=medium, L3 =long.

Cheers folks
The l2/l3 just refers to the length
Also called medium wheelbase/long wheelbase
Its the sizing that is used for vans
Was hoping to get a look at a layout of each to help me decide!
Ta

By the way the particular make of van doesn't matter - the ducato /sprinter/transit etc all come in short/medium/long/extra long which are all similar sizes - i can't decide between a medium or long (l2/l3)
Thanks

So its a panel van conversion you want..right?

Yes panel van sorry

Although I'm sure that if there is an obliging Funster they will help. But you'd really be better off taking a good look around various dealers for any PVC (I take it that's what you want) rather than focus on one particular type as you may well find something that suits you better for your intended purpose. Sorry I don't know of any in your area so you may have to travel a little, but for such a major purchase surely it would be worth it.

Or you could try the various on-line market sites and see if there is anything you fancy - THEN GO AND HAVE A LOOK AT IT. DON'T buy sight unseen, too many con artists around.

Oh and by the way, :welcome4: Taking out a subscription, just £15 p.a., will be a good investment and allows you full access to all the site resources, including Jim's excellent book "Buying a Motorhome" which should be mandatory reading for any prospective purchaser.

Sorry, would've been happy to help but dont have a PVC. Just take your time and look around. Good advice from TerryL above.

Try Knowepark at Livingston -

You will have to ask them to unlock anything you want to look round. Not sure how they are dealing with covid and cleaning but you could phone and ask.

We bought our previous van from them.

Sorry Terry I've explained this really badly!
What i was hoping to do is find some folk with a medium or long wheelbase van conversion so I can see how they look and feel in 'real life'
I'm not fussed about the actual van manufacturer - it is more to help me to decide on the size of van to buy
I'm leaning towards ducato because they are a wee bit wider than say a transit. I think i will probably go for a new van as there doesn't seem to be massive savings buying one say 3 years old.
Cheers

I dont know if Terry is still doing camper van conversions, he must have a lot of good photos to help you choose a design.

Hi Duggie12,
firstly length of van, depends on how many people are going to use it, if there are 3 or 4 of you then you may want the L3 or 6.3 length so you could possibly have a front dinette / converting to bed! With a rear 2 singles or a double, thatbut an L2 6m will work Next, the make of van will determine how you sleep in the double, length ways (transit as they are too narrow) transverse, Relay/Ducato/sprinter 6ft across.
if there are only 1 or 2 of you then lengthways bed will work as you properly will not need a dinette at front, so Transit or VW.
as others have said go and check out dealers stock and get a feel for internal layouts and I would draw up a wish list of kit you would want in it, and list All the reasons for using the van.
good luck

Hi Dougie, w2f sorry can't help regarding van, would say watch how many posts you make as you get 5 free posts to start then you need to become a full member £15 a year great value for the information you can find on here.
When you are looking to convert your van go around dealers if you can to get ideas of what lay out is comfortable for you.
Good luck with your Search, it is a wonderful hobby and you live in a brilliant part of the country to enjoy it. I would say if you intend to use it in winter months make sure you have lots of insulation.
Just as an aside there are some brilliant older Moterhomes out there with everything done low milage and can work out a lot cheaper in the long run.

I did as you are suggesting to Terry, I bought a brand new white van L2 H3 Citroen Relay for £14300 including cruise, Air con etc. Then I bought all the bits to go in it and asked a convertor to build for me, my avatar shows the result.
lt cost me less than £30,000 for a brand new PVC, fitted out the way we wanted it, higher spec than most vans at £50,000 + and we love it.

I would draw up a wish list of kit you would want in it, and list All the reasons for using the van.
good luck

And a list of the things you definitely do NOT want :)

I had several lists

Must Haves
Would Like
Could Live With and
Hate.

Green upholstery was on the "hate" list btw.

Hi ,i am in Glasgow and have an L3 peugeot conversion. Sent me a pm and we can talk. duggie12
Cheers Cris.

Sorry guys I really have made this confusing- i should have said I want to buy a van and convert it

Its just for 2 of us. I definitely want a dinette at the rear which converts to a bed. I don't want a fixed bed.

I am keen to get a new/newish van because it will be my only vehicle. I dont need a car day to day and the van will be fine for the odd trip to the shops etc

I don't about a washroom. We wild camp a lot in Scotland so any sort of van will be luxury ! We sleep quite a bit in a skoda estate as well.

Otter if you don't mind me asking where on earth did you get a new van at that price? I'm looking at about 22k inc VAT for that! Was it a while ago?

Cris that would be great i will message you
Thanks

Im in Carluke, Duggie we have a h2 l3 Fiat Ducato Globecar Campscout. If your anywhere near give us a shout if you want a look at the layout size etc.
Kenny.

I'd also start a list of the ideal base vehicle:
I think the general consensus would be;

VW Crafter and Mercedes Sprinter at the top of the list
Fiat Ducato - The most popular choice, 80% of motorhomes are built on a Ducato base
Then the Citroen, Pergot etc
Ford Transit at the bottom of the list

Why is transit bottom out of interest?
Thanks

We have a fantastic 2006 Avantgarde 140, but don't know about the 12-13 thing, however, ours has the 'U' shaped rear loung which offers loads of seating and relaxing full length ( I'm almost 6ft & my husband is 6ft) the sofas pull down onto a roll-out slatted bed base and is huge and very comfortable, there is also a full wall at one side where our TV is mounted and if you do want to mount your TV you need to check this is an option on whichever van you go for. Many people after seeing ours wish they too had one with this very user friendly lay out. Very few newer motor homes have this lay out. We also have the upper double bed too but use this for our bedding & storage. What I don't like is the limited fridge space and I feel the full cooker takes up too much space, but we wouldn't chage it for the world (not just now anyway)

Keep watching www.carguru.com it was late 2018 and Citreon often put a batch of vans pre registered up for sale. Arnold Clark was the dealer, who I believe is a Scottish firm.
if you look for late 2nd hand vans, They tend to be delivery vans that have been thrashed or builders vans that are bashed inside. Mine even came with dab radios, satnv and built in tracker..
pm me if you need any equ suppliers details.

Cheers otter i will keep an eye out
Did that price include or exclude VAT ?
I would buy one tomorrow at that price !
Yeah Mary that's definitely the bed arrangement I want. I'm not going to bother with a cooker/fridge/washroom though.
Thanks
