Hi. As title, just started planning for up-coming trip in May. Got stuck trying to find places with aires, camp sites, etc. in Provence & around Toulon, Marseille, Montpellier or inland. We did Avignon last year, but if all else fails...……… Fancy near towns, for sightseeing, eating out, etc. Been looking at Camper Contact, All the Aires, Camping car Park& Camperstop without much luck. If anybody has been down that way & has any pointers I'd appreciate a bit of help. We'll probably head toward Clermont-Ferrand / Limoges after.
Many thanks, Chris

Toured that area extensively and the last time was last year.
Stay away from the coast and Marseilles in particular.
Toulon and Montpellier are other towns i stayed away from.

We keep to the pretty parts and tour round on the motorbike going up gorges and balcony roads and investigate clues (gorges you can scramble up or down) then do the beautiful villages, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, mountains. calanques etc. They have restaurants in the back areas as well and (to us) is a far more fulfilling vacancy

If that is your scene then get back to me but if it is the major towns then i cant help.

At the moment we are parked up at Gruissan which is one of our favourite spots.
It's not to everyone’s taste but we like it.
Great cycling and walking, a huge marina to wander round, a lovely old village and loads of restaurants and bars.
It can be windy, which is why they have wind surfing championships here, but the weather is usually good.
A huge aire beside the marina and in the summer another one beside the beach.
It’s not far from Narbonne, the Canal du Midi, Carcassonne and the border to Spain.

Easy access to the A75 and Clermont-Ferrand when driving down or back north.

Richard.

And if going in May check out Banon cheese festival. Washed out last year !!!

Gorge du Verdon; Albi; Cordes sur Ciel - just a few suggestions that occur immediately. None of them on the coast.

The CCP Aire at Le Puy is close to the town centre. It gets busy so best to arrive early and avoid weekends.

CAMPER PARK Aire Le Puy en Velay
Place Maréchal Leclerc, 43000 Le Puy-en-Velay, France

The Cevennes are worth a visit. You used to be able to overnight outside the heritage railway station at St Jean du Gard but it is no longer listed in CC but there is a well reviewed aire close by at CC58144.

SW is Atlantic coast surely.
We are on the Med which in my book makes it SE.
I do appreciate that Monaco/Nice are further east but if you try to drive east from here you will get rather soggy.

Chris there is a nice campsite at Thiviers (I have a static there) an hour south of Limoges on the N21. Its quiet and well kept. 15minutes from Brantome and about the same from Excideuil. and 20min from Périgueux. Many beautiful places in the area. Small town but has Auchan and lidls. And a great proper Saturday market.

Gorges du verdun, as people have mentioned, although the aire/car park we stayed at was pretty small, but short walk to the beautiful lake.
Nearer Clermont-Ferrand is Salles Curran, about €15 per night, but a well run aire, with good facilities buy a beautiful lake with beach areas. Good for walking and kayaking.
I think it was Pont de salars that had a free aire in the town and a 2 km walk to a lovely lake with a beach, cafe etc.
We also stayed at a vineyard 5 minutes walk to canal du midi and 30 mins to Béziers, about €10 and expected to buy a bottle - still cheaper than the coastal aires. (Domaine Mi cote Béziers)
Most of these were on campercontact.

Sounds good Khizzie . Thanks

The Aire over looking Le Lac de Sainte Croix in Provence is possibly our favourite stop (many happy memories rather than the facilities though - it's quite small but if you are lucky and get a lake view spot it's hard to beat!) and another decent Aire nearby at Riez which has a great market a couple times a week. There are also a couple of decent France Passion stopovers in that area including a Lavender Farm just north of the lake.

The lavender farm is easily the best fp we have stayed at.
They do check membership.
Living in a private truffle orchard for a couple of days is the best.
Quite steep to come back up a hill if no electric bike or motorbike though

There's a cracking stop we use when going towards Agde, or further onwards to Spain, La Couvertoirade...it's a Knights Templar village, approx 5eu/n, usually a few vans overnighting.
No charge in the winter months, no services there at all.
It's about 50 mls north of Bezier on the free A75.
