Import duty would only apply if the vehicle was "built" outside of the EU.

We are getting into rules of origin stuff there.

I meant used vehicles particularly motorhomes. Same with lots of other stuff you could bring as much as you wanted into the UK free of vat. I've not seen much evidence of anything getting taxed less.

Have you seen import duty being charged?

VAT has always been charged even when were in in the EU.

Yes but if you bought a motorhome vat paid in Europe you didn't pay vat on importing it into the UK. The same with boats etc. There's a whole industry providing the vat status of yachts to avoid possible vat liability

Before we left the EU you could just import a used vehicle which was originally vat paid in the country you imported it from with no vat or duty payable. Now you are liable for vat on the value of the vehicle when you import it into the UK

That's not how I recall it. But it has been a long time. But there should be no import duty either way.

Anyway I am not really talking about joe public buying a 2nd hand vehicle.

I am talking about a business buying stuff from Spain to Sell in the UK and splitting the difference.
