Don't live abroad but have been using an Amazon fire stick in the motorhome for the last 6 weeks. Mainly in France but also in Spain. Will work anywhere as long as you have a decent internet connection, we've been using iPhone hotspot and Vodaphone 100gb sim.

Have used it successful throughout France and Spain ,where data signal or WiFi was good enough.
Using Nord VPN get most UK channels wanted.using the apps I personally have S/loaded.
Can't see why you couldn't get the same .
Hope this helps

I recall Jeremy Clarkson advertising them, standing on the cliffs at Dover sending them to France by Drone....so I an guessing that yes, they work in
France.

Firesticks will work anywhere where you have internet access...

Under current EU portability rules, any paid content in one EU member country must be made available in other EU countries for a certain period of time. This was meant for holiday makers and short stay trip. It is not designed for expats.

Use the device past that period, and then you will need to use a VPN / Smart DNS to access content from another EU country.

So you will get UK paid content for approx 30 days , without the need for a VPN / Smart DNS. After 30 days, you will either need to to use a vpn / smart dns to access the UK content, or live with the content amazon and the apps have the rights to for the eu country you are in.

(Obvs Brexit may change this with regards to UK content)

And note that this is for PAID content, so the likes of iPlayer, ITVBlub, All4, Demand5 , UKTV, which are all subscription free are not governed by these EU rules....so vpn / smart dns will still be requried.

Or put some "third party " apps onto it (via the downloader app), and forget direct access and go for pirate streams and content instead.

We just returned from SW France and all the free players (iPlayer, All4, etc) worked on our Apple TV without a VPN/smart dns. Just had a mifi with PAYG 3 data sims, no special kit.

If you use a UK SIM card (bought in uk) then you do not need VPN for iPlayer, ITV etc. Its only if your using campsite Wi-fi that you will need VPN as the IP address will be a non uk IP address
