Hi team, we intend to go to France for a few weeks from about early/mid September until end October. We have toured throughout France extensively in previous vans and like both areas.

I just thought I would ask for peoples views on these two areas together with any recommendations on where to go and what to see. If the West side then we would go via Roscoff and if the East side then it would be via Calais. In each case we do have to make the trip all the flippin way from Scotland however 😳

We don’t use campsites, we do use Aires, we rarely stop more than one night, we like to walk, cycle and taste all the local food and wine 🙂 oh and warm is good, dry is fine, don’t favour wet and cold or too hot 😎

I could answer my own question but sometimes it’s nice to have other perspectives

Thanks team 👍

Our favourite area in France is Alsace! It depends how much you're into wine but we found in Alsace the producers are a lot more friendly than in some better known areas

That IS our problem, we love the Alsace! 😍

Both excellent choices and a good time to go as the grape harvest should be in full swing in both departments. Possibly more festivals in Alsace following the harvest & all those gorgeous villages. However it's hard to beat the Charente Maritime islands of Re and Oleron for their extensive cycle tracks and laid back coastal vibe. Plus the journey down through Brittany and Vendee is scenic all the way, nicer than NE France (but that's just my opinion). I think I could happily make a 5 or 6 weeks tour of the west coast but not Alsace because, gorgeous as it is, there isn't as much variety of scenery there.

After a lot of trips up and down the west side of France we are heading to the east a week on Monday aiming for Alsace, the Jura, Savoie and Haut Savoie regions. Whether we will see them is all is to be decided and the weather will play a big part.

I can't help with any advice as I've done next to no research other than determining there is a lot of cheese to be found in these regions. Given where we live we will be starting from Roscoff. :)

West coast every time for us. First time over for 90 days and still spent most time on the west coast. Even after years of holidays here.
Although coming back over in April again for 90 and we are definitely heading east. But you can never tell

Thats a tough shout, both have their plusses and neither have minusses apart from potential weather.

I would use www.ventusky.com and make my mind up a couple of days beforehand as to which had the more suitable weather (which is likely to be Charente at that time of year. The other one will still be there next year is our motto

Don't know if you have seen it but there is a rick stien series about a trip down the east side, now wether you like him or not it is very good on the travel side and has persuaded is to go that way next month.

Thanks team for useful input. I dunno how close i am to making a decision tho! :giggle:
