Backups. If the forum server ever goes down. We don't want to lose everything, do you?

I take multiple server backups each night. We had a choice to do it as a low priority task and deal with a slow server for multiple hours and risk the backup not completing. Or hit it hard and fast and get the job done quickly and safely with a short period of downtime. We chose the latter.

It's complicated. But it is not the only task that gets cron'd and they have to be done in a certain order.

You don't know how right you are ... talk about naive! As an adult I once recited a 'poem' to my Mum that I'd read about crabs and how high they jump ... I didn't realise they weren't the type you see at the sea-side!

I for one am very happy that the safety and security of the forum and it's members are very high priority. I expect the server logs make some interesting reading at times. Strange we don't have any members from Russia or China that I know of, but there will be traces of them

The internet is not just a benign resource that allows you to google for or buy anything normal. The dark side is pretty unpleasant. Karl and Jim keep that sort of stuff well away from the members. All you need to know is that what they do works. 15 minutes of down time a night is a small price to pay

It's not, the daily quiz which runs on the forum shuts down for about 5 minutes at about 10am here which is in the early hours in the USA where it is based.
