I'm replacing my obsolete half moon SSC with the new one. It says one than once in the manual that it must be installed vertically. It gives a fixing template that means that it doesn't matter which way up or even on its side only that the long axis must be vertical.

It's solid state with no valves or moving parts. The only reason I could think for fixing it vertically would be to ensure its ventilation holes were not covered by something in the locker causing it to over heat. Anyone think of another reason?

I'd like to install it horizontally (hanging on the underside of a shelf) were it would get good ventilation. What would you do?

The instructions are obviously machine translated from German (even though Alden is a French firm) maybe the German love of the imperative came through unintended?

Almost certainly it will be to do with heat dissipation. Vertical enhances airflow over it.
