Just had a tow bar fitted by LNB at Bristol who did an excellent job with great customer service. Whist there I saw their air assistance system for the rear axle on Alko torsion bar suspension The cost is just over £2000 so not cheap but given what things cost for motorhomes, nor is it silly money. My axle has a 2000kg limit and I was hoping to raise this using one of the recommended companies that specialise in this area. Has anyone had any experience of air suspension systems on a torsion bar rear axle and any suggestions/pitfalls/benefits etc?

MH is a Hymer Exsis i 504 3500kg. ( By torsion bar I am referring to the thick tube axle with rubber in it and trailing link arms - apologies if this has another name!)

We have AS Airsuspension fitted to our Hymer T668SL with Alko ... I had it fitted when we uprated to 4200kg.
This is the fourth moho we have had AS fitted and very happy with service by Phil & Cath over many years.
AS also fitted our HPC hydraulic levelling system....Brilliant!

I had Air suspension added to the rear axle on the alko chassis of my Bailey by LNB. I needed to increase the load capacity of the axle as it was near the limit. I used SVTech to do the paperwork etc. To increase the axle limit to 2240kg I also had to increase the size of the tyres` to take the increased load. The original tyres. 205/75/r15 load rated 109 the new ones 225/75/r15 load rated 112.

I fitted Dunlop air suspension kit to my Alko chassis about 10 years back, took about 4 hours to fit and works very well especially in strong cross winds, I consider it money well spent,
Its also nice to increase clearance on the rear body overhang when needed plus of course the softer ride,

Do the increased width tyres need new rims or do they fit to the standard van rims ?

Thanks for your post, good to see that your system has lasted 10 years. I was slightly concerned that the systems I have looked at come with a limited 5 year warrantee. Any one know how to tell if systems currently on offer utilise Dunlop components?

TeamBandS LNB fitted the AS kit to mine if you are unsure of the Dunlop.

So, I keep coming back to this thread and wondering if its something Id like to do to my bailey as I have to admit the noise from the rear on bumps is fairly harsh at times. Am I right in understanding the air bags essentially take the place of the bump stops?

Their is very little to go wrong really, the air bags are replaceable and the plastic pipe also, the steel brackets are galvanised so only leaves the gauge and valve block, these are also readily available,
I noticed the air bags are showing signs of slight cracking, but this is expected from rubber exposed to the air
for a long time, I cleaned and coated them with silicone to extend there life but will probably replace both next year,

I’m interested too having seen a few threads on this over the last few days.

an Australian sounding YouTube video comes up on a google search and yes, the bags replace the bump stop. (Youtube ‘air bag man’)
