Hi all you knowledgeable people ,the Daughter is looking at buying a motorhome and has seen one with an MOT till July 2021 but the advisories are
  • Offside Rear Brakes imbalanced requirements only just met. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. (1.2.1 (b) (i))
  • Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced (6.1.1 (c) (i))
  • Nearside Front Wheel bearing has slight play (5.1.3 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • is this really bad and expensive to put right or should she walk away . Her budget is only £16000

The MOT is only a very cursory snapshot of condition.
My advice is the engage a trusted or known engineer to vet the vehicle.
Structural corrosion should be considered carefully, as it never gets better, today's advisory is tomorrow's failure or uneconomic repair. Please seek professional advice.

Agreed Clipgate

Corrosion when mentioned at MOT won't just be superficial and is usually the harbinger of expensive correction in the near future.
Those other advisories are just what can be expected from normal wear and tear and *should not* be too costly to fix.
The MOT doesn't cover the engine, gearbox, transmission etc. so professional advice is recommended.

Her budget is 16 grand but how much is the van, if it's less than 10 and otherwise what she wants it would leave plenty to put it right but if it is already at the top of her budget, best left alone.

Get the rot looked at,,can be very expensive..BUSBY.

Sounds like the whole brake system needs sorting out, probably all pipes replacing etc to be safe (literally!) and that alone won't be cheap, as for the rest ... I would say leave it be as the rot, once set in, will only get worse.

One thing is certain, none of the above will have been addressed.

My talisman is in for MOT this afternoon, the only advisory from last time was slight corrosion on offfside inner wheel arch ( caused by leaking battery ) The ones mentioned above are easily sorted maybe a rusty wheel cylinder or two and clean up the brake pipe ferrule with a bit of emery paper when bearings done. Wish mine luck please because I’ve booked the tunnel for sept. 3rd.

Just bought a 1998 Talisman so fingers crossed for you! 🤞

Test cancelled ! Van over heated at MOT station so guy wouldn’t test it . My job for tomorrow, glad I’m retired. Drove it home with no problems.....investigation required.
