Advice re old iphone3 plus 3sim (1 Viewer)

I have an unlocked iphone3 , my new phone is locked to vodafone for another year. We will be off travelling in France and Spain for a month at a time soon when Nick retires, yippee. Would a 3 sim pay as you go work just for calls and txts in europe or is it too out of date even for that? I know all the internet stuff and apps are very slow or no longer working. I would use site wifi for my ipad or macdonalds type of thing. Apologies if the answer is obvious but dearest daughter thinks I have a bit of brain missing when it comes to technology! Thanks in advance and I have donned my thick skin for the rude answers.

I am in Portugal at the moment and using an I Phone 3 fir everything including the net with a Vodophone data sim in my mifi and normal free wifi when available with no problems
