Looking for one now
My 1999 N+B Flair Life has a hot water heating system and I think the system would benefit from flushing with distilled water and then refilling with a glycol mix. There is no fluid visible in the expansion tank (although the system does heat up when run so there is some water in it) but the deposit on the pump is a nasty brown colour and the guy who sold me the vehicle said he didn't put any glycol in it when he accidentally drained it down, just refilled it with water.

I don't want to leave it this way a moment longer, but need some advice on how to do it. The manuals only talk about topping up and bleeding the system, not a complete flush through, but they do make mention of a drain cock so I'm guessing it's something that can be done. If there is a drain cock I assume the easiest way would be to completely drain down the system, slowly top it up with distilled water, run it for a while (bleeding the air out as required) and then repeating this operation until the water drains away clear and then finally draining down again before topping up with a final glycol mix.

Does this sound like the right approach, and does anyone know where the drain cock is likely to be?

Thanks.

This should help you.

Is the 2928 the upright one? only seen them on narrow boats. Certainly worth having a word with Alde in Wellingborough although I think the price may have gone up a bit,but they will check the whole system over and have parts to hand 👍

You may be right about the price. I had ours done in November 2020 just before the Christmas lock down started.

Yes, it's the upright one, sandwiched between the bathroom and the wardrobe in our N+B Flair Life. Given what's involved I'll opt to pay to get it done properly.

Well. Now what?

Took the MH to an Alde approved engineer to flush the system and he said he didn't recognise it but would call Alde direct and get some guidance from them on how to do it. An hour or so later he called me to say that no-one at Alde knows how to do it either because it's over 20 years old and there isn't anyone currently employed at the firm who knows how to do it.

Help! Does anyone know anyone who knows how to flush this system?

Try a boat yard, always been that type on the narrow boats we have hired 👍

Being N+B I would have a look under the floor for a drain point as they tended to do things properly back then, the manual makes reference to a drain pipe on page 21 once drained down I would just fill and run and then drain again a couple of times and see how it looks, it should be easy enough to refill and bleed as you will have bleed nipples on all the high spots.

EDIT looking at the user manual go to page 3 Fig 6 part B shows a drain cock on the bottom of the boiler glycol stack, my guess is that this is already set up to drain through the floor of your van.

Nick, give Graham Cutmore a bell. He is retired now but still gives advice and sells Alde spares.
He was Alde's Mobile Team Manager, until he left to start up on his own.

Tell him that Jock from Deeping recommended him. He has been extremely helpful to me in the upkeep of our Compact 3000 unit.

Contact numbers sent via PM, to respect his privacy. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

As I said in post #4 it will be much better if you take it to Alde UK HQ in Wellingborough for a service. Just phone them up for an appointment. You can stay overnight on their secure forecourt and get it done first thing in the morning.

Alde HQ in Wellingborough are brilliant...we had our whole system checked over by them...they found a crack in the burner which they replaced...and also the touchscreen control panel was not responding to touch as good as it should according to them so they replaced that free of charge... we stayed in their premises overnight... cannot recommend them highly enough...only problem is they are so good they get booked up pretty quickly so usually a few months wait to get in.

Yes, I recall and I thought going to an Alde approved (trained) engineer would have sufficed, but it seems not. However, this engineer said he'd spoken with Alde direct and they didn't know how to do it, so booking it in and taking it to them might just be an expensive fool's errand.

Right this moment I don't know what to do. We're off for a few days and while we're away I'll mull over the very helpful suggestions given to me thus far and decide from there. One thing is certain. It needs doing, so I do need to find a solution.

Thank you to everyone so far.

Nick, did you make enquiries using the phone numbers I supplied by PM?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Not yet Jock, but I will when we get back from our trip in a few days time. Thank you very much for helping us. We really do appreciate it :)

Thanks, that's really helpful. I will send the manual to the Alde approved engineer and see if that does the trick :)
