I used to have a 3-way Dometic RMD8505 which I hated. It was terrible at keeping stuff cool, the temperature varied and the freezer didn’t stay cold enough. I replaced the thermal paste, I installed external fans - they helped but it still wasn’t brilliant . I was quite relieved when it broke and I had an excuse to replace it with a Thetford compressor fridge which was transformational! I thought I’d never go back to a 3-way.

I’m on holiday and I’m renting a motorhome. It has a Dometic RUA6408X 3-way and I quite like it. If seems to keep things cool in the fridge and cold in the freezer (although I don’t have a thermometer). It still has the problem of not being able to set the freezer temperature independently of the fridge. However, I wouldn’t be unhappy to have one in my own motorhome.

The big difference between my old RMD8505 and the RUA6408X is my fridge had a climate class of SN and the new fridge has a climate class of T.

  • SN = Subnormal: suitable for use in ambient temperatures of +10°C to +32°C
  • N = Normal: suitable for use in ambient temperatures of +16°C to +32°C
  • ST =Subtropical: suitable for use in ambient temperatures of +16°C to +38°C
  • T = Tropical: suitable for use in ambient temperatures of +16°C to +43°C
I wonder if motorhome manufacturers supplied UK motorhomes with a fridge/freezer with a climate class of ST or T, we wouldn’t have to fit internal and external fans in order to get the thing to operate normally when we go to hot climates on holiday? Even the UK has been known to get to 40C.

Presumably an ST burns more gas to keep cold in hot climates. The answer to all issues seems to be a compressor fridge that can react to different conditions.
