Hi Everyone we're "New Zealanders" coming over in June for the "Tattoo" (and 3 months of roving the British Isles in our new Auto Trail Apache 632 from Elite Motorhomes in Banbury) . Question please - "where do we pitch?" All the near campsites show no availability or to that effect already? Suggestions welcome as we are keen to be organised - coming from so far away 'n all? Chris.

Edinburgh will be rammed for the Tattoo. I think you'll need to find a site away from the city and travel in. There are Park and Ride sites, one is out near the airport ( roughly west of Edinburgh ) but I don't know if they have height restrictions for the parking areas.

Just seen this info online re Park and Ride "For Edinburgh, park and ride facilities are your best options for day trips. Of the seven park and ride car parks around Edinburgh, Hermiston, Sherriffhall and Straiton are not suitable for 'vans, with height barriers at 1.9 metres.

There are good train connections to Waverley Station, too.

Have you considered taking out a membership with the Camping & Caravan Club for your British Tour, which would afford you the opportunity to use this facility..................

The Caravan and Motorhome Club has a site on the outskirts of Edinburgh which is where we stayed last year. There is also a shuttle bus which goes into Edinburgh from there and picks up after the Tattoo. I'm sure you will love it if you can make the necessary arrangements.

We too have used the Dalkeith C&CC 'meet' as a base for the Tattoo.
There is a local bus stop within easy walking distance, but do remember to fetch your weatherproofs with you, as well as taking a cushion with you if you intend attending the Tattoo.

If you don't mind wild camping I could suggest a few places for you.
 
Have you got your tattoo tickets because they can be like hens teeth. If you have difficulty some bus companies run trips from surrounding towns and can have places quite late. The fundamental point is thst Edinburgh will be packed solid with festival goers. Allow plenty of time to get anywhere even on the buses because the traffic is even worse than usual. There however will be masses of things going on all day some free, some cheap and some expensive. If you are into it opera is apparently good value for money. Parking in the town centre is difficult enough for locals who know their way around so use the park and rides or other public transport. There are also a lot of extra late night services. In town the Edinburgh bus company have a very good value day ticket and an excellent phone app. Hope you have a great time

Welcome, Edinburgh in August is a great place to go and stay. The Tattoo is on each evening and the Edinburgh Festival is all over the city with great Music, Comedy and Drama throughout the afternoons and evening.
When we visit we stay at Morton Hall. Important to book as its very busy. The bus departs and returns to and from the city at the gate. You can buy bus passes for your stay from an office on site or the driver.
The whole experience is highly recommended, give it a good few days, look at the Festival Website and book a few shows you like the look of and just busk the rest. You'll have a great time regardless of the weather but if you own Gortex coats bring them along, as it can rain.
Whatever you do, do not be tempted to try and drive through the city in August and be sure to have made a reservation for your stay.

It’s around 5 miles to the park and ride (near the airport) where there’s plenty of parking. From there we take the tram, £8 for a day rover and you can go up and down the line as many times as you want. Maybe 20 mins.

You might find availability OK as it’s not dead central for the festival etc, and of course you could always taxi in to town if you didn’t want to drive to the park and ride.

A few places to wild camp if you are only intending to have a few days in Edinburgh, I would strongly urge longer as it is certainly an amazing place to be for the festival.
Can' add much more than others have already said but happy to pass on places you could stop over and I'm sure you won' be alone as the city will be bursting at the seams

Chris, did Elite Motorhomes discuss the payload issues with the Apache 632 when they accepted your money. Here's a snapshot of the Apache's available payload (without any extras) on a van registered at 3.5T; it's incredibly poor.

Hi Chris, hope you enjoy your visit to the Britain and especially to Scotland !! Re the tattoo, if you join the camping and motorhome club you can as a member go to any D.A. (District Association) who run a meet by Edinburgh Airport,
no electric, but has Elsan point, toilets, the Secretary of the D.A (Perth and Angus) can arrange tickets and organise coaches to/from the site to the tattoo.

Could try Halbeath Park and Ride in Dunfermline, there is a regular bus service into Edinburgh, but check the timing for the last bus back to Halbeath Park and Ride.
 
We "did" the Tattoo circa 2005ish. Stayed at the Edinburgh CC Site, and hired a taxi to the venue, shared between 4, it was surprisingly reasonable. The taxi company took SWMBO`s Details, and got a permit to go right into the venue, drop us off, and came back after. Our biggest problem was the seating, which is "stacked" and cramped. We managed to get SWMBO onto an end of row seat, with only a few steps to climb. I dont think either of us could do it now more than 10 years on!. Another alternative, We found a CL, (22 Damhead in CC book) 55.884580, -3.186730 ) Elect and Hard. South of the Ring Road, which we used last June, on our way back from the "Midge Safari". (Glencoe and Skye!). It`s also not far from Roslin Chapel, which is worth a visit. Slatebarns is next door to Roslin.

Better services from Ferrytoll park and ride but less space for motorhomes especially as many of the spaces are in a multistory. Stagecoach run late buses during the festival and timetables are normally available at the park and rides
 
If wilding is an option you have Portobello beach but its closer but busy. I prefer the harbour at Musselburgh which has toilets and a water tap and catch the bus to Edinburgh, or the Park and Ride at Wallyford is a good stopover too.
