auto roller 707
Hi guys. Looking for some advice. I have an Av tex telly plugged into the TV station on my roller team 707. It only seems to work when I’m plugged into EHU. It doesn’t however work when not. It is plugged into the cigarette port next to the 230v plug. Should that not work off of the leisure battery? It’s just I would like to have it working for the kids to watch a dvd when driving and or when not hooked up. Any advice would be great.
Cheers
Graham.

What voltage is your leisure battery at? Perhaps the tv is just working off the leisure battery charger.

Panel says it’s at 14.6 volts. 100%. I have a solar panel on the roof that keeps it topped up I’d imagine. Iv only just got the van from a dealer so very Green with it all.

It could be your 12v socket is switched and connected to your vehicle battery. That means it will only work when the ignition is on \ engine running however be careful as the power supply may not be properly regulated to 12v and could damage the TV.

I would measure the voltage at the socket. If you haven't got a multimeter screwfix sell cheap ones for about £8. 14.6v is the charger voltage, the battery voltage will drop to below 13 without the solar or mains charger on.

I tried running the engine but doesn’t make a difference. I then plugged telly into cab socket just to see. That then worked so must just be that one in the back.

I will check that today and see if power is going to it. I’d imagine not as the telly worked when plugged into cab.

Sorry for late reply had to get my subscription set up 🤣🤣

As you've guessed it would appear the socket you're trying to use is not powered for some reason.
Faulty, loose connection, fused, etc.

Ours works on both, and we have a roller team.

Funny how it works on hook up though.. Anyway do some measuring 😊
Yeah it’s a strange one. I was thinking it would be some kind of saftey thing for battery, but would still like it to work without the hook up. Looked into panel above and it’s a mass of wires lol. Yeah Iv got a meter somewhere, never used the bloody thing before right enough.

In some vans the 12v system is automatically turned off when engine is running but you could just find a live feed and power a socket from your leisure batteries when travelling🤔 we have a Hymer and that has power from leisure whilst on the move.👍🤔😊

See! You knew you bought it for a reason!(y)

It's called forward planning!:giggler:

Could be the cabling to the socket is on the small side and the volt drop at the socket means the voltage is too low for the TV to work.

This is what I am thinking .... You have the hab electrics disabled when driving and you are relating it to the EHU maybe as when you park up, the first thing you do is setup the camp, plug in the EHU, etc, before putting the TV on?

Right guys, for some strange reason unknown to man it has started working fine!!! I took the kids away last night for a local camp just cause we can, 😃 and noticed the wee red light was now on. 🤷🏻‍♂️Tidy job. Cheers guys for your help.

Wonder if it's a loose connection that may fail again?
Might be worthwhile removing the socket backplate and checking?
Might just have been a "dirty" plug connection though that's "cleaned-up" with all the ins and outs!

I carry one of these with me, while not a replacement for a multimeter, which I keep for finer fiddling, it’s pretty accurate for a quick heads up on voltage at rest, cranking and then power outlets. Used it to show my friend that his battery was goosed in his Volvo just this week. Cheap, British and very well made.

Definitely going to take out and check everything, but happy days it’s at least getting power to it. 👍

Looks good, I will need to invest in one. Iv just bought the van at the wknd so quite a bit of gear and fine tuning needed.👍

No more "are we nearly there yet!" seems to have that effect on parents. :giggler:

Just as a foot note I always use mine on 12v and got in the habit of switching it off by removing the cig plug in. Anyway it stopped working so I tested the cig plug and all was good so I assumed it was the 12v lead and ordered one off eBay, it didn’t work either.
So I messaged the seller and explained. He gave very good advice and told me to turn it off and on a few times with the on/off button and this cleared it. Something to do with static or whatever the Techs call it building up in the switch.
For info

To give you an overview, all the essential electrical devices should work from the 12V leisure battery, when you're parked in the middle of a field with no EHU. Lights, water pump, fridge control, heater control, 12V sockets. The heating power comes from gas or diesel, but it's controlled by 12V boards. You should have a warm motorhome, and a hot shower if you want it, with no EHU necessary. The battery should last at least overnight, and probably for a weekend.

The 240V sockets won't work if there's no EHU. If you have EHU, the mains charger keeps the 12V battery topped up so it can supply all those essentials.

!! Update on the situation!! So Iv sussed out that the telly/12v socket works when I turn the light switch’s on on the panel above the door so somehow it must be powered from that circuit for some reason.

I’d say that you have an electrical problem there as I’ve never heard of the power socket works via the lights circuit.

Wonder if someone has wired it that way and possibly didn’t know enough to sort a proper job 🤷🏼‍♂️
