We are currently looking for a used motorhome. How long is a 2008 motorhome likely to last before rust etc claims it? Is it just a case of who knows? Just thinking that if they are all on the same base, the fact it’s a Hymer won’t help in this regard and we would be better going for the newest we can afford regardless of manufacturer. What do people think? Our budget can rise to more than £38k but have seen a couple I like the look of.

As you say base vehicles are the same for each converter.

How good any base vehicle condition will be generally depends on how the owner/s have looked after it.

There’s lots of info how certain base vehicles have water traps etc.

Good luck with your search.

Bear in mind some have an Alko chassis which I think is galvanised so should be more robust than a standard steel fiat chassis. May be worth checking the chassis type.

Oops forgot about Alko 🙄

I wouldn’t worry about rust causing the demise of a motorhome, it will be the body seams, water Ingres and knackered internals. Like most modern vehicles they don’t overly suffer from chronic chassis rust.

Part of the demise of our last motorhome was rust (fiat) which is what made me think about this. Actually, on looking again the Hymer I like is on a Ford chassis.

Might be worth checking security rather than chassis then 😊

Our Fiat was 2002. I have read about security issues with Fords - there’s always something! Back to our tent then I think lol …

It’s no big deal with the Fords.

Easy upgrades and a decent alarm/immobiliser and all good 👍

A class hymers are built like tanks with very little steel bodywork. That's why they hold a good value. Even so £38k is overpriced and the value will fall sharply when we see the back of covid and thousands go back to flying off on holiday. Current demand outstrips availability and that will suddenly reverse

Ours is 2006.....ageing like everything and everyone, still works, looks good after washing, would be good to idea to get a professional inspection, worth every penny....interesting posting.

By coincidence, our 2007 (but 2006 built - x244) Hymer was serviced and mot’d only yesterday. I asked about the underside and was told there was no rust and, if cleaned, would look like new!

My friend bought a new PVC on a Ford chassis and there was an attempted break in within a couple of months. The b*****ds we’re obviously disturbed (M62 services!) so didn’t gain entry but door scratched. Although this was obviously upsetting it hasn’t put her off as she loves the driving position etc. The first thing she did was have extra reinforced locks installed on both cab doors and just wish she had done it before taking delivery! Basically what I’m saying is don’t be put off a Ford, just improve the security.

With reference to the above mentions of Alko chassis, it is only the part to the rear of the cab that is Alko, a bolt on extension.
The front part cab forwards is Fiat, whatever the year or model.

It’s an Exsis I-522 Lenny.

You won’t have same problem with security of an A class as you would with a Ford C class so don’t be put of by that😊

Thanks for reassurance. We haven’t seen it in person and OH feels It is too old to pay that money for so not sure whether we will go and see it.

Post a link to it on here and you will get lots of useful information on vfm.
Someone may even know the van

Thats surely a lot of money for an Exsis. The B classe are quite a bit more substantial imo.

2008 is juddergate time, I'm really surprised no one has mentioned it. Thorough check of the driveline required if its a 2.3 from that era.

Edit just seen its a ford so judder not an issue.

Yes it is a bit expensive probably more than it cost new.

It's on a Ford, it was Fiat that had the problem.

Might be a bit more expensive however in these time prices are high and dealers can virtually ask what they want it’s worth asking for a discount but I bet the seller will be very reluctant🤔
i haven’t seen any price mentioned yet by the OP? I thought they said they have that amount available🤔

I think all the vans we have looked at are expensive for what they are and all more than they would have cost new. We either have to just pay up or else go without one for a while. Prices may stay high for a while though. Ideally, I would like to find one that would last us a good long time so maybe better to get the newest we can afford for our budget.

The van in question is £38k. We have a bigger budget if necessary but a max of 45-50.

There is one on EBay for £28000 but be careful if you go that route🤔

I have actually checked that and price has now been changed to £37,995 don’t go there🙄
