Looking at a Hymer
I've been thinking about buying a campervan for years and I've seen this Hymer on eBay. It seems like a decent deal! I know that the shower, basin tap and toilet, and heater doesn't work - but having read a previous thread, it seems affordable to change the pump and get a heater. I'm still keen, although I haven't seen it yet.
I was intending to hire a mechanic to go with me to check for rust, auto electrics and the engine.
I would be happy to hear your views about whether you guys think this is a good buy?
I know the Fiat chassis is meant to be solid and these are generally reliable motorhomes. It's got fairly low mileage too!

MoT Nov 21 was quite a list of fails - a fair amount to get it through pass 30 Nov the next MoT Pass 24 June 24 . Only 200 miles between the 2.
If you can get it looked over maybe a goer?

Maybe request a new MoT as a deal sealer?

It needs careful inspection especially the corrosion it's previously failed MOT on

"Exhaust emits excessive smoke or vapour but not likely to obscure the vision of other road users"
Never seen that advisory before, you'd hope it's not so bad other drivers can't see. The source of the smoke needs checking though.
It needs to be bought for the right money as there's potentially lots to spend ?

Oh and w2f

See if the cam belt has been changed in the last few years, dear job if it snaps.
2445cc and 91hp won't be the fastest but will get you to where you are going.
Under body condition more important than anything at that age, as already pointed out it had a fail for fust but the following mot - no mention, so hopefully it was properly repaired

I'm a bit curious about what appears to be wooden painted floorboards with gaps between them on the bathroom floor.

My first Hymer was a 1994 many years ago, and a quick MOT check on-line shows it's still going strong and clocking up the miles several owners down the line

You would need to inspect the lpg tank for corrosion and check its age, if it's over ten years old it may need to be replaced.

I would suspect that, if it has the faults as stated plus previous faults causing an MOT failure, there are other faults which exist, or about to occur, in the habitation area, so not covered by MOT.

Since this is your first motorhome, it sounds like a big project to take on with an unknown total cost at the end.

I am sure that you could find better in the £10,000 range without the hassle, and which you could use immediately, not in 6 months time which would be start of winter.

I know, I was concerned about the corrosion and emissions (quite a big one considering all of the ULEZ restrictions everywhere now!). He's expecting £5250 for it, but I'm not sure how much those repairs would cost?
I was thinking of taking a mechanic up with me to bargain - offset the price with the repair costs!
Ive just spotted another one, but this one has been off the road for a while, although the interior is immaculate. Mileage is good though.

I want to travel full time, so all of your input I invaluable to me. Thanks 😊

Apparently the cam belt was changed four years ago and it may need new under sealant- no problem with the bathroom floor! Although, it looks a bit draughty😁

The shower in the other one you are considering looks like a domestic electric shower, even a 6Kw one would draw around 27 amps, so it would trip a 16 amp EHU post and European EHU's are normally 6 to 10 amps so even less chance of it working on the continent. If it is a domestic shower then that would suggest that the person who has been modifying it doesn't know what they are doing.

Don't walk away from what appears to be a decent motorhome, RUN as fast as your legs will carry you ....... I think you already know that but were hoping someone might be able to offer you some miraculous remedy for all its woes ..... I've bought from Uber Leisure and been happy BUT you need to climb all over and under it and rest everything but they do have and sell low priced motorhomes that haveb en taken in part ex and then passed on in the trade

I suspect it was overweight with those domestic fittings

That 2nd one hasn't been on the road for over 4 years !
Who knows what nasties lurk underneath
- apart from the mains powered shower of course !

You were probably hoping it would work for you but I think it was a good job you didn’t get it.
Keep looking the right one will turn up.

You've probably used up your free posts as a guest on here.
If you pay your subs it'll be the best 20 quid you can spend on motorhoming.
Have a look in the resources section, there's a guide to buying a motorhome, it'll give you lots of information and give you things to think about that property haven't even occurred to you yet.
Good luck with your search 👍
