I am planning a six week trip down to Croatia, via Camping Bled in Slovenia during September and October. I normally just plan a rough route and places of interest and turn up at sites as and when we decide to stop. We might book Camping Bled as it is always popular but do I need to book sites in Croatia? My copilot is concerned that they will be very busy/full due to the fact that you cannot park off grid.

I wouldn't book anything in Croatia in September or October, I've never found them full at that time of year.
Lots of options if you do find one full.

If you book you become a hostage to your own plans and this prevents detours or other options you find along the way.
Good luck, it's a lovely country to tour in.

I’d suggest that some sites you may need to book, but not necessarily now. For instance somewhere like camping Draga at Moskenica Draga will be busy until the end of September.

Last year we couldn't get into Camping Bled in late September - fully booked. Stayed at the site by the river about a mile and a half out of town.

Other than that, we didn't have a problem anywhere in Slovenia and Croatia throughout September and October. Some of the sites in Croatia are absolutely huge!

Make sure you have an ACSI card as it makes the fairly pricey sites on the coast much more reasonable.

Would the ACSI card work in Sept?

I ask because we are looking at driving to Greece next year instead of ferry Ancona-Patras, for two reasons: ANEK have stopped Camping on Board and the cost of Austrian tolls has nearly doubled.

Is there a fee for ACSI card as we might only use it in Croatia as we normally wildcamp?

All campsites have their own dates for when the off ACSI peak season starts and ends so you'd need to check individually.
There is a charge for the discount card and books, about 23 pounds I think, but you may get it for less from some retailers ?

I've just done a search for availability of ACSI discounted sites in Croatia for the first Saturday in next September. The screenshot is below. 70 sites accepting the card.

Yes. There's a fee for ACSI cards. About £20 from memory. We got our ACSI card specifically for Croatia. It had paid for itself by the third night.

As mentioned by others, I wouldn't bother booking at that time of year.
Have been through Croatia several times from September to mid November and never experienced a site anywhere near full.

We did Croatia in September and October in 2022. There were a couple of campsites where you had to get there in the morning to guarantee a place; those being at Trogir (Amadria Park) and the one at Omis (Galeb). These campsites were filling up daily. That was more the case in September. Once in October it became easier as we went back to the one at Omis on our way home and it wasn't so busy. People have mentioned ACSI which I would agree pays for itself. But if you're planning to go to Dubrovnik (Solitudo) I would suggest booking through CAMC if you're a member. They offer a discounted price which, not cheap, is well below the campsite's own price and when we went they didn't accept ACSI.

We did exactly what your doing this year, apart from Camping Bled we managed to get on to every site with our booking in advance, sometimes we did call or book the day before. We got all the way down the coast to just outside Dubrovnik and back inland.

I am so disappointed that wild camping is no longer allowed in Croatia. It used to be so easy. Is it a blanket ban on wild camping? It must be serious if nicholsong is having to use camping grounds - he’s the King of Wild Camping. 👑😀
