Any recommendations for santander areas and down to Northern Portugal.
Aires wild or cheap campsites.
Having done most of the Spain coast from Rose's down to Gibraltar then the algarve.
This year in two weeks time to do the Northern parts of both. Will be out for 8 weeks.
Laurie.

Ist stop. There's a free aire with water/emptying in Santander and the town/seafront are worth a couple of nights.

Always the elephant aire.

Elephant aire is one i have used when getting the ferry back to the UK 🇬🇧
Yes it's a good one keep them coming. 😄

If you are passing south of Leon, Valencia de Don Juan has a decent area de autocaravanas with free parking and services. The town itself has a castle to provide a bit of interest if you fancy a walkabout. Link to area de autocaravanas

In Portugal Peso de Regua is a good base for seeing the Douro Valley. There is an inexpensive area de autocaravanas in a great location overlooking the river but it is popular so arrive in good time if you want a spot with electric. If not there is free parking on grass down at the riverside below the area. Link here. Peso has a station on the scenic Douro Valley train line and the stretch to Pocinho and back is well worth the trip.

Electric not necessary in the summer
The odd day in winter when the sun is lower in the sky. 😂

Just looked it up can get busy get there early.
Will be folk wanting the ferry ⛴️.

Heading the same way in a couple of weeks, what day are you sailing?

What is it like in late August for space 🤔
Not been at that time but it can get busy, especially before or after a crossing. The aire takes about 25 vans but the access road that passes it is not busy and each time we've been there, there has been 20 or so parked on the road. We've parked in the aire and on the road and not had problems.
The access road is at the back of the university so is usually quiet and even more so on a weekend.

We went last yr. Check out our trip, if you like see below

bus stops outside.

Lovely inexpensive camper stop at Orense, useful for doing the washing etc as well as great showers and toilets. Hot pools along the river, map in reception.

Been here 5 or 6 years ago,
Left all rooftop windows open walked in town then the heavens opened up full on thunderstorm. 🥶

This is a free Aire in Tomar. It used to be a campsite but is now a free aire for motorhomes.
Tomar is well worth a visit and this aire is 5mins walk to the centre.
We were here 3 weeks ago.
