So in our search for a van there are many factors. If cost were no issue it’s all obvious - nice new van, probably custom built (because we need a bed for a 6ft 5 individual and to accommodate the dog) with a euro 6 diesel engine (this assumes electric and hydrogen engines not yet possible).

We have an okay budget and have seen some options but in the layout is king game the best at present seems to have a euro 4 diesel engine.

Can anyone comment on how restrictive travelling round UK and Europe is with a euro 4 diesel engine v a euro 5?

And does anyone have any idea how long it will be possible to drive a euro 4 diesel or euro 5 diesel engine for?

Thanks in advance

I'm euro4 .I drive where I want and have had no problems. I will be driving it until I either sell it or die.
My question was how limited would we be with a euro 4.
Unless wishing to drive through centres of emission zones you won't have a problem.

And how quickly will that become more restrictive.
I doubt that much will happen.
some French towns now have made it tricky to travel around the outskirts.
You can get exemptions in france to enter emission zones with polluting vehicles .a maximum of 24 x per year. Can't give the application site link as it is on my lap top and I'm on my phone but Ven has used it through Rouen.

instead of paying to enter you will be banned altogether to their clean air zones, with hefty fines if you do.
As above.
I wonder if these low emission zones will be obsolete and disbanded when most vehicles are electric. There will just be a few vintage vehicles that won't make any difference 🤔
Now you are dreaming. A) they will still exist and goalposts will be moved And B) air pollution, especially in London, will be the same.
Bottom line is, a decade from now, you will be unable to buy a fossil fuelled vehicle.
You're dreaming.

I know we should go for the euro 6. Not currently an option in the layout we need with the money we have saved - not keen on taking out a loan.

Yes we can get a euro 6 on our budget but the 6ft 5 one won’t fit in the bed!
I think the sweet spot is a van registered as a Euro6, but before adblu

News to me that there is a proposal for a LEZ in Dieppe. Can you give us a link?

I suspect the ferry terminal will be excluded and you might be kept out of the town centre. That happens now already because the Pont Colbert is out and not due to return until next year. So no big deal.
Apologies it’s Le Havre not Dieppe!!

I think not.
The only new vehicles you will be able to buy that will still run of fossil fuel will be specialised vehicles, construction, agriculture etc.

Unless the rules get changed (and I agree the date may slip a year or two), there will be no production or import of fossil fuelled vehicles from 1st Jan 2035.

Which means at some point in the late 2030's the EV's (and maybe Hydrogen) will overtake conventional ICE vehicles.

Ain't that far off!
Almost no kid a school today will ever own a new ICE vehicle.

I would never buy a Euro 6 or 7 vehicle, they will all be banned anyway going forward plus they’re complicated piles of crap, stick with old technology so much less to go wrong and save thousands on maintenance and servicing and cam belts etc etc, you need to factor that in as well to the overall cost of travelling around.

Eventually all EVs will get banned too and charged a fortune for travel, they have to make the coffers swell somehow. Why would you consider buying a new vehicle if it’s diesel engine regardless of a number next to it.

I love the London trash, you can’t come into our LEZ with a polluting vehicle, No wait a minute you can come in if you pay us, in fact you can pay 3 months in advance as well to pollute if you have the brass 😄

You may be unable to buy a NEW fossil-fuelled vehicle. The euro 4,5,6 applies to new vehicles, otherwise we'd all either have to scrap our current vehicle or make it comply with the new euro number criteria.
By that point Euro 4's will be banned from all cities and many towns all across Europe, (and probably taxed out of economic viability)
Has LEZ or ULEZ banned any vehicles or does it mean those less compliant are charged? Banning won't bring in revenue.

Also, I wonder; can we upgrade a euro 4 upwards, to the latest euro X criteria? It may be much more cost-effective to replace an engine and it could increase resale values if there wasn't the evolving obsolescence.

The EU are looking in to pushing that date back.

In the UK, certainly in London*, euro 2,3,4,5,6 do not exist, they are not the requirement .The emissions requirement is that the particulate level is below a specified amount. Most use 'euro' 5 or 6 as a means to show that they meet the specified amount. What people do not realise is that many vehicle from years ago are able to meet this requirement.
* The London Ulez requirement is 0.08g/km NOx.For petrol this is = euro 4 & diesel euro 6 but many vehicles from years ago can easily meet this requirement it is just that people believe what they are told.
There is one gentleman running around London in a car that is around 15 years old that easily meets the emission requirements & has the paperwork from the manufacturer to prove it ,& has done to TFL,
It is a question of asking the manufacturers for irrefutable proof of the emissions of your vehicle .If they are below the above figure then you can circulate in the LEZ & ULEZ freely

I agree the date may well be pushed back, but it will only be by a year or two, so whether the date is 2037, 38 or even 2040, the point is the last diesel/petrol cars will roll off the production line well before any of todays primary school kids leave education.

As for the London U/LEZ as you say it's all about particulate numbers.
This is measured every year when the vehicle goes for it's MoT.

So if you happen to drive a truck converted to run on used chip oil, this will be picked up at the next MoT.
