Which alarm?

Hi all, I am considering getting an alarm fitted to my Chausson but not sure which is best and not too expensive. Any suggestion gratefully received. Thanks

Hi Fermenter, it seems you really do get what you pay for when you purchase alarms. Many of the cheap ones are just regular car alarms and they don't cope very well in a large motorhome. IMO you need as a minimum an alarm that can be armed while you are inside, you should also have your lockers alarmed. You should have LEDs front and rear which leave people in no doubt that you are alarmed. I can recommend VanBitz... professional outfit down in Taunton.. even have a camp site.

The stike back alarm does the job.. worth contacting Eddie and his team.... OK not the cheapest alarm, but it does do what it says on the tin.

I have also had a satellite TV dome fitted by them, A Sterling Combi Pure Wave charger / inverter / a reverse polarity change over (automatic) to save my RV's electrics in europe.. / A NASA BM1 battery monitor system../ and a battery master... plus a backup camera system.

They do the lot... but I started out with the Alarm...why? because so many motor home owners recommend them and even Safeguard Insurance gives a discount for the alarm and the backup camera.

I like my money, but I want to know my RV is safe and sound with the best alarm fitted.

The 'Strikeback' alarm system from Vanbitz is about the best you can get as a specialised MH security device.

It is expensive compared to many other systems but if you value your MH then have a look at their web site.

We take delivery of a 2008 Knaus on Friday and I'm going to get a Strikeback alarm fitted as soon as possible.

Vanbitz are based in Taunton but there is a firm in Warrington who fit them and I intend going there to have the work done - 130 mile round trip rather than Taunton at 400 miles round trip.

Yes, we bought our Rapido with one on, appears to work ok and meets Thatcham 1 standard.
Just make sure that your get your paperwork sorted with the Insurance company, if you lose it, it becomes a nightmare.

It says the company does a lot of things as well as alarms... Eddie and his crew know motor homes in side out and I would say RV's even more so.

So if you are thinking of an alarm and other things then VanBitz is a good starting block.

I thought Corbra only did car alarms?

My insurance company Safeguard gave a discount for the alarm and the backup camera when they were aware it was fitted by VanBitz... I wonder why? but then they would not cover the RV without this kind of level of equipment (alarm wise)... do not get any paper issues for insurance companies Dave.. VanBitz has it all for the buyer and some.

I am sure there is a lot of alarms out there that claim they do the job... But funny on MHF the one name seems to pop up over and over.. VanBitz.

I had one on the 76 I had, and just had one fitted on the new Bessaccar, the only prob I had was the hab door connection stopped working sometimes but they do meet the cat 1 criteria of the Ins Co. I had mine fitted for £ 299.00 which I thought was enough to spend because let's face it if the scrotes want to get in they will do. Pete :thumb::thumb:

Only 30miles away for us. We had one fitted to a previous van by Vanbitz themslves ...excellent service from them but a long way from us so glad Leisurepower fit them.

I had it fitted in Glossop near where I bought the MH, but prior to that because it was easier to have it done on site, I priced one of the same in Bispham for the same price not the same alarm, but cat 1 just the same, I will have a look on line to find the address for you. Pete :thumb:

I do aggree what other poster's say here 'you only get what you pay for But its also down to the skill of the installer ( poor made electrical joints) is one that comes to mind.

I like the sound of the Vanbitz strikeback but can't see from the Vanbitz website or the Thatcham site that the Strikeback is still Thatcham approved. I think part of it being approved as a Cat 1 is that it has to be certified as professionally installed.

That link is for upgrades not straight Cat 1 alarms. Plus I don't know how Thatcham decide what is a car alarm and what is a light commercial vehicle alarm as some appear in both lists. Thatcham also says somewhere that where older alarms are superseded, the replacement alarms may be accepted by insurers individually. Might be related to how fast Thatcham can test them and approve them? It is confusing.

Yes, I understand the link is for the Cat L2->1, as far as I am aware that would cover most motorhomes, certainly those built on the Ducato which has a factory fitted immobiliser. If I'm understanding things correctly, CAT2 is immobiliser, CAT1 is an alarm with certain features + immobiliser, CAT2->1 is the upgrade of a vehicle already meeting CAT2, to CAT1 by adding the alarm bit. Reading the Vanbitz website, they seem to talk about CAT1 without actually stating that the Strikeback is Thatcham approved. I guess I should give them a ring and find out as the thought of using a supplier with a good reputation and specialising in motorhomes is more appealing than going to the local garage who may not do a tidy fit.

I have recently had a Strikeback Alarm fitted at the Vanbitz Warrington installers.

They have issued me with a Metasystem 'Certificate of Installation'.

The Product Specification gives a Thatcham Evaluation no - TUL1-109/0304 - which is on the list of aftermarket Thatcham category 2 to 1 van upgrade alarms.

The certificate is for me to present to my Insurance company of proof that an upgraded alarm system has been fitted and satisfy their criteria.

So maybe the Strikeback is Vanbitz's name for the Metasystem HPAT 5.0 alarm, the TUL1 – 109/0304 number you quote is the Thatcham evaluation No. for the Metasystem HPAT 5.0
