Apple tag found on van. Beware!

Sorry but don't understand where this Apple thing comes into it

Can't see it as don't use Facebook

Me neither but am thinking that the apple tag acts like a tracker for whomever put it on?
Presumably not the owner of the van?

Or did the owner put it on so if stolen could track?

It’s so annoying when it’s Facebook and we can’t see

An Apple Tag is a tracking device, so if somebody hides one on or about your van, they will know where it is at any given time, for instance, if they want to know your home address or place it's store unattended with a view to nicking it.

My daughter has one of the Android versions that she placed inside her car.
It went for a body repair recently with a family friend, she knew he had taken her car home on at least one occasion!!
Plus no work done on it for 2 days as no one was nearby with a phone to pick up it's signal and relay it on to her..

I know people do use them to even track their cats !!!!!!!!!!

Just had this land on my Facebook page.

Its a genuine website started and run by a mate of mine Ken Hacking and his wife Adele Gibson who run another forum (motorhomers). Never realised before but his name could put a few people off nowadays:LOL:, but i can assure you he will not not hacking anybody's computer etc.

But your phone should let you know that you are being tracked if the AirTag doesn't belong to you.

Wonder why the perpetrator put the Apple AirTag in the hook up socket rather than sticking it somewhere less likely to be found? The other question which comes to mind, having done zero research, could any owned paired devices be identified from the AirTag?

Heres the post to explain the apple tag for those that cant access Facebook . and the pics.

Word of warning to all you campers out there….
Our customer came in today for a electrics check over, wile doing our checks we found this apple air tag fitted in his hook up socket.. only 2 nights ago it wasn’t there.. there obviously starting to track what vehicles they want to steal… this was stuck in at cart gate services Yeovil he thinks as that’s where he last stopped …

I've got the older Tile tags on the cats. They're really only useful if you can get within 30m, but that's good for finding them in the dark or under cars.

The newer tags like AirTag and the (currently not very useful) Android Find tags do tell you if you're being followed by a tag that doesn't belong to you and isn't on range of the owner. So there's some stalking protections.

Devices that use GPS and a phone signal with a battery life of a few days can be purchased online for about the same price as an AirTag. If you wanted to find out where a vehicle was parked overnight for neferous purposes, that'd be a far more reliable option than an AirTag.

Correct, but it will only let you know that an Air Tag is tracking you, but not it's hidden location, and on an Android phone, you need to have the "Tracker Detect" app loaded on your phone for Air Tags to be detected, plus the AirTag must be separated (out of phone range) from the tag owner for at least 15 minutes to appear.

So if an air tag goes out of range of person who placed it how do they find it again does it give position to any smart phone within range and then pass on to original owner🤔

The Android app Tracker detect will flag up if you have one on your van.
Yeah. I got a notification a couple of weeks ago that I was being potentially tracked by a third party tag. It was for my own Chipolo tag on my keys that was registered using that phone! Thanks Google. 🙄

Yes, it's the iPhone or cellular iPad network that senses an Air Tag and sends it's location to the tag owner on their Apple device.

Thanks for clarifying that for me I did not completely understand how that worked🙄 learn something new every day on MHF 😊

surely only if it is an apple phone?
The Android app Tracker detect
I have 4 or 5 called that?

If it was my van I would arrange a surprise, drive out to a remote location, drop off tag in a dead end lane, motorhome moves on whilst I ambush whoever arrives looking for it.

And what would your weapon of choice be? 🤪

We bought X2 simple trackers for our cars.
They cost about £20 each (I think - she's out now so I can't check) and we hide them in our vehicles. They are smaller than a 2p piece.
My wife can monitor where the cars are at any given time, and the battery life is a reported 70 days, but mines still going at 100+ days.

The mind boggles how easy it would be to use these in a sinister fashion. It's all very James Bond.

This has appeared on Almost every Facebook group today. It's great publicity for Vancon Conversions. Call me a cynic but that's probably all its meant to do. Airtags are the worst trackers out there. Anyone with a phone can find them .
