Pet passport obtained in France

When I arrived at the tunnel pet passport area in June with my Belgian pp for Finley in hand, I was asked whether it was a French issued one. I didn’t query it at the time, but reading through this thread and the post ref asking if you are a French resident driving a uk car, this may have been what they meant.
Any one else been asked? I’m back in Nov so if I’m asked again I’ll query it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

If you have a Belgian Pet Passport it will clearly state 'Belgium' on the cover - in four different languages I believe. So being asked if it was a French one really doesn't make any sense.

That post 'asking if you are a French resident driving a UK car' is merely a quote from the dubious Facebook group 'Strictly Legal France', which Bodoge is investigating for the source of their information.

BTW, how is that going Bodoge? Have you managed to locate the candle with the handle on the gateau from the chateau?

Maz, all I have gotten has been posted and commented on, before I took up the challenge, so far nothing new. Imo, the French/EU passport regulations and requirements are typically as clear as mud, for my part I shall do what I'm happy with and respect the decisions of others to do what they are happy with. Too many " what ifs " in my thinking, anxiety I think, as suggested, always been like it and old dogs etc fits.
To paint my picture, I'm a relatively new mohomer, only had my present van 30 months. I had my previous van, a Swift Capri, during back end of the 90s, enjoyed every moment, but available time in 2000s saw its demise, until the pandemic saw me back in the saddle, enjoying life to its fullest, albeit a tad late. At the moment sat sited in my favourite field, was once a campsite, now just a hook up for friends of the owner, there are two lakes where in a couple of hours I shall be teaching maggots to swim, or so it seems. My take, do all you enjoy and enjoy all you do, be happy.

Thanks for trying anyway. (y)

The passport was still in my hand so he couldn’t see it clearly; just that I had one. 👍🏻

I carry a printed copy of EU 576/2013 together with the layman's translation in my dog's Pet Passport wallet. Both are taken from the European Commission's own website. This is more than enough to refute any suggestion of residency requirements - not that I've ever had to do so.

Another confirmation that residency is not required comes from the availability of adopting dogs from eu countries. I fostered a dog from Cyprus and her pp didn’t have any “owner details” filled out and didn’t until I was about to take her to France with my other two. What would he have said then. Two Belgian and one Cypriot dog all resident in the uk going to France. 😆

In my quest to keep up to date with all things French Pet Passport related (obsessed? moi? ), I have just found this on the French Ministry of Agriculture website, in a document dated 22 June 2023:

This further highlights that British residents can enter France (or indeed anywhere in the EU) using an EU Pet Passport.

Thank you Maz

As far as I'm concerned when returning to the UK they should be carrying out the checks in accordance with the UK Plant and animal health agency, never mind applying their own😠

Hi Richard. I'm not too sure where you're going with that particular link. Getting back into the UK is the easy bit as far as Pet Passports are concerned. The contentious bit (at least to some people) is whether an EU Pet Passport can be used by a British resident to enter France. At long last the French Ministry of Agriculture has actually written that they can be. The French Ministry of Agriculture! The entity that up until now so many reporters have been saying will not let you have a French Pet Passport unless you are a French resident, or possibly have a French holiday home. Wonder if any of the news websites will be as keen to publicise this information as they were to sensationalise their earlier misinterpretations?!

The French admitting that some people were getting it wrong

Just returned through the tunnel today. Obtained a Spanish Passport before leaving Spain cost of €22.
On presenting this to the pet control at tunnel I was told that it was invalid as the information and dates relating to the rabies vacancies were dated prior to the passport being issued. These had been transfered over by Spanish vet.
I challenged this to no avail. Luckily I had also had the current outward bound AHC completed too. If I had not had this I was told I would not be allowed to travel.
I have since emailed the Spanish vet and he informs me that they were in the wrong as he as vet certified that every thing was in order and petcontrol should have accepted it. (Try telling them that.)
My quandary is what happens next time I go away. Do I need an AHC or chance the passport again?

Unfortunately you will need another AHC. If rabies vaccination details are transferred across, then the date for the microchip must be the date of implantation not the date of reading. Next time you are in the EU get a rabies booster done and the passport will then become valid again.

What a mess we are in - thanks to Cameron for the vote, and Boris for lying about it all. Surely someone with some common sense can get PP's re-introduced as they are a very reliable way of ensuring animals can move from one country to another without being a health risk and without all of the misleading interpretation of the current rules by vets, DFDS and other checkers, border officials and anyone else in the circuit. Personally and until it gets sorted out I'm happy just to visit the vet in Folkestone and get the AHC for £100 and be done with it. Why can't my local vet charge me the same instead of trying to rip me off for £240?

I would do the AHC. See my comment re the number of wrong interpretations of the regulations that seem to happen.

Could you check your pet passport and see if the vet has circled chip implantation date or date of reading. If the later, then that is the issue and only an outward AHC will do next time. As maz has said above, get a booster in the EU and this will sort you out.

I assume your vets have the same reason as ours, at £225 although another locally is £250. When I asked why his charges had taken a hike from last year, £190, his response was that it was an inconvenience to them and he charged less than local high as he wanted the business. Well I won't be using their services any more, bloody cheeky bar- steward.

To be able to issue our own Pet Passports again we just need to sign up to adhere to the EU regulations for animal and plant health. We would then become a Part 1 listed country instead of Part 2. However the current government seems unlikely to do so.

On the whole using EU Pet Passports instead of AHCs works pretty well. However, if you are going to get a Pet Passport you do need to check that it has been completed properly. The 'How to Complete Pet Passports' booklet explains exactly what to look for.

When we took the dog for his worming on Friday in La Fleche the lady wasn't sure if she would be able to as dog is British but has got a Spanish (Basque) passport but a vet came out and put her right. I even managed to get her to cover the rabies jab with plastic as the Spanish vet forgot.

Tunnel are very thorough we had same thing last year when they put wrong date in for issue date and rabies date, both done on same day but they put rabies a day earlier. We emailed them on return and they did reissue a duplicate which we used this year and got 3 year rabies jab.

Yes tunnel are very thorough because checking the AHC's and PP's is the only job they do at the Pet unit. They therefore check all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed and if they want to keep their job they don't want to make mistakes.

The original pet passport was devised by the UK and was necessary to bring animals into Britain when EU member. Brexit gave the EU the opportunity to punish the UK further for leaving the club.
I suppose if there were enough travellers with pets crossing the channel willing to put together a petition we might get somewhere but alas the government have bigger issues to overcome.

We were given the opportunity of signing-if there was punishment it was totally self inflicted - and the non signing the cause of much of the NI difficulties
petitions have been raised
It was promised to look at the whole thing
But Ofcourse hadn’t happened
The next government will sign up to equivalence in plant and animal health

Don’t know how the pet control can read my 2 jacks Belgium passport as the vet had terrible handwriting just like a doctor😁😁
Cannot work out half the numbers but after about 16 trips now they have sailed straight through without question so all good.
Hate to think how much I would have spent had I used AHC ever time🤔🤔

Except it's not a 'punishment', it's just applying existing EU regulations and we are treated as any other Part 2 listed country.

I've been told that if an English vet makes an entry into an EU passport then it becomes void and you wouldn't be able to use it again. If that is true, and i've been told it by a few sources, then you should get the rabies jab in Europe.
That is correct. I have 3 dogs with EU Passports. All rabies jabs have to be administered in Europe and the passport will me made null and void should a UK administer the rabies jab. We have our annual jabs done in either UK or France but these are recorded on each of the dogs individual innoculation card. Same with kennel cough vaccine.

Personally I wouldn't rely on info from a UK vet being transferred onto an EU passport. When I got mine, the Belgian vet offered to do this, but I declined, instead having her give Fido a new jab (his second in three weeks, but sadly it doesn't now last for six years). The French border guard, somewhat gleefully I thought, pointed out that I would therefore need to wait three weeks before travelling back. I played top trumps, and showed her the AHC I had travelled out on...
