If you have a Euro6 ducato without adblue (around 2017-2019) it would be worth getting your ECU software upgraded by a Fiat Professional dealer to prevent possibly serious issues.

I attach the service bulletin with information about the issue. Essentially if you have ECU software v28 or lower, you are potentially at risk. V32 addresses the issue.

It is only applicable to Eu6b engines WITHOUT SCR (adblue)

The easiest way to check your engine ECU is to use a vGate iCar OBD2 dongle

Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 OBD2 Diagnostic Tool Fault Code Reader OBDII Compatible Car Adapter Check Engine Light for iOS, Android and Windows https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071D8SYXN/?tag=mhf04-21
And download Multiecuscan (for IOS) there are Android equivalents. Alfa something.
Multiecuscan is around £60 per year, but you can get sufficient information from the free version.
Go to the App,

Go to the Cog icon and select the correct OBD2 adapter

Go back to the main page and run a scan

. It gives a report like so
IMG_1736.png

You can see the ECU software version is 0028, Plus some other errors
After upgrade it shows the ECU software version as v 0032 and all the other parameters match the Fiat notice

Will a Fiat Professional dealer do this for free? Or only as part of a service, fix or warranty claim?

They will do it as part of a service or should but don't think it will be done free that would be admitting to the problem.

I put my van back into the Fiat professional dealer network for its 6yr 30,000 mile service with the specific purpose of getting this carried out.
Dispite me giving them a copy of the service bulletin, and writing specific instruction to update to v32, I checked before I left and they hadn't.

The initial response from service desk was the ECU had been checked and v28 was the latest / highest version it could take.
I called BS and showed them the v28 screenshot with errors and asked to explain why they had not been cleared or if the had, why had they returned.
The service manager got me to bring van back to the bay, plugged in his computer and with 30 sec confirmed it needed an ECU update, which took 10 min to do

Fiat dealers are not required to apply updates unless there is a problem but some like Adams Morey at Portsmouth apply them when they service or work on vans.

I took mine to htc hemel for a recall and asked them to upgrade the ecu but they refused to do it unless it was in for a service

Recently had my cambelt done At a Fiat dealer initially they did not want to plug it in but i had only booked the appointment based on them loading V32 The technician explained if there are no codes for the kit to read or a campain letter there will be no update. Mine was clear of all campains. It did throw up some BCM codes that did not return. A member from another forum had his updated (at same location and dealership) with a cambelt change, but it was first time it had been to a Fiat dealership. It was updated but no confirmation as to which version.
Are they (Fiat) waiting for problems to occur or is V28 the preventative or standard program and V32 the restorative. ie trying to resolve problems that have occured.
In the Ducato case we have software dealing with the build up of tolerances normally this would be done at the design stage and variable selection based on measurements or write the program to use sensor values , maybe more difficult to do this dynamicaly. We know there has been a number of iterations (for whatever reasons) at least 6 to my knowledge and we have a suituation where one set of variable A (V28) is not acceptable, produces excessive sooting so use another set of variables A ie V32. (an approach ive used as a manufacturing engineer.
Does anyone actually know?
just because 28 is earlier than 32 does not make it unacceptable
If using any version of the software (even 32) I would still advovate the checks ive mentioned in the past
I suspect lennys was changed as it was earlier than 28 and thus on a campaign list as mine was in 2019.
What is a real question is how to determine there is a problem before any codes are throw. What is the real limmit for injector variation and how calculated eg mean of non zero results or mean of non idle results etc.
If version is prior to 28 i would suggest updating.
I would like to see injector results for as many engines as poss(twin egr)
How to determine if you have a lpegr cooler problem

there are Other threads here where i explain ways to determine your version number including the most cost effective.
Multiecuscan for windows is £50 one off charge 1yr free updates lifetime useage.
Alfaobd £31 for android lifetime
Only apple users pay annualy

Flashing the ECU is not risk free. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Problem is we know there was/is a problem with the early versions, its just a matter of time for the overfuelling to turn into £6-10k worth of problems. It is also known that Fiat fitted sensors not intended/ calibrated for Ducato.
Guigsy you are obviously not a manufacturing engineer. Total preventative maintenance.

care to expand? as a NON mechanic, i just want my vehicle to work as it should - so do i try to get it updated or not? i am strongly considering taking the motorhome to Adams Moray for a gearbox oil change as they seem to know what theyre doing, hopefully they will advise as to the right course of action ...

Now the Service notice mentioned above state the Technical reason for problem :Software Calibration. The difference between later versions eg 26,28 and 32 could be software calibration tables (lookup tables) dependent on learned values stored in the Ecu (or build tables, ie part numbers of the BOM (Bill Of Materials) Fiat will know component part numbers related to VIN.
We know that some learned values are stored so this doesnt sound unreasonable.
Once upon a time I thought 28 was a working program and 32 a recovery version (for engines with a problem). I now suspect the calibration difference is equally likely.
Any comments on above?

In my eyes what you suggest is sensible

There is a very small risk that flashing fails and causes an expensive repair, but it does exist. And as it's not a recall notice, it's the garage's discretion and their risk if it goes wrong. Flashing provides no benefit to the garage. It might even reduce their future work.

Not a motorhome but I 'flashed' the entertainment module of an A6 Audi to enable online services because the local Audi wouldn't do it, apparently they did not need to give me a reason as to why!!! The unit said it had been upgraded and when it went to restart, nothing worked. The unit not only does the online services but sat nav, music, radio, air con, heating , heated screens etc etc.......
An independent specialist quoted to redo the flash and then, if necessary, exchange the unit but there are no guarantees. Audi also have something called component protection, if the replacement is from a vehicle on the Audi database, then it wont initialize.....there are no guarantees or comebacks .
Audi dealer in Ipswich did the job, £3000!!!! and then said they would of done the upgrade.
Lesson learnt, don't go with the first quote and get a reputable company to do it with a guarantee that they're going to do it right first time or sort the issues out if not.

To anyone that knows thier ecu version number could you post the version and whether manual or comformatic. I now have my suspicions that V32 is only applicible to comformatics (as was V25).

I had an engine light problem on my 2017 pre-adblue 150 2.3 manual Ducato. A truck garage in Switzerland plugged it in for a diagnostic (blowby sensor error so no problem in 30c weather!) but upgraded the software from v28 to v32 just because they could. And it goes a lot better on the hills since: the change gear arrow lights up long before the engine shows any sign of struggling. I subsequently got AlfaObd free version on an old Samsung tablet with a Bluetooth dongle so I can avoid the stress of having an engine warning light when abroad with no idea what it meant

So v32 on a manual.
Alfaobd demo on android is a good cheap solution. Easy to upgrade if necessary.

Possibly unrelated.
If you have the engine remapped does this include reprogramming the ECU?

So my van has only been in for recalls so it's never had an update it runs fine and is on 25k now , what would you do now regarding the update ?

No. two things could happen depending on the company
1 Your existing Map (with all self learn stuff) is uploaded to a central location and modified to requirements
2 an Unknown origin generic map (modified) is applied to your ecu. Not specificaly moded for your engine.

Resurrecting this old thread as I have just had my 2018 Ducato 2.3 130 multijet updated from V24 to V32 and found it difficult to find a Fiat Professional service centre willing to do it as my van has no existing faults and a clean exhaust. See Fiat Service News 10.023.19 for details of this. Adams Morey in Portsmouth did mine along with a service. Didn't notice any difference on the journey home but hopefully this will help preserve the DPF and low pressure EGR.

Most Fiat Professionals only do the updates if instructed by Fiat or there is a problem that the update will sort.

Adams Morey always apply the updates when a vehicle is in for a service or other work.

I had several phone calls with Motus Fiat in Glasgow. They wouldn't do the update from V28. They even wanted to charge me to tell me what version I had but I could already tell them as my OBD reader showed it. I quoted the service notes but still no as I had no problems. I even contacted Fiat but it was like banging my head on a brick wall. I gave up in the end.

I had the same thing HTC at hemel refused to change it saying if its OK leave it alone

They (portsmouth) didnt/ wouldnt when specificaly asked to do so when i had the cambelt done.

Since this has been resurected i will add some "new" in fo. The only difference between V28 and V32 is the idle injection rate. Under load they are indenticall.
This info came from a German tuner who had inspected both versions for a customer who wanted V32, under German law the manufacturer cant apply new software (dieselgate ?) But remapping is permitted.
I suspect if cooler blocking exists with v28 the problem was initiated by earlier versions. I HOPE v28 is ok for life. Although the blocked cooler syndrome is common with hundreds of instances how many 10s of thousands of good working vans are there? Even reaching 300,000 miles

I specifically asked AM to confirm they would update the software before I booked the service, otherwise I would have looked elsewhere, maybe that's why they did mine. Not exactly blackmail, more like an incentive! Just as an aside it possibly is running a bit better now, seems to pull a bit harder and fuel consumption is slightly better, only by 1 or 2 MPG. Could just be the placebo effect.
