Is that not about a 36 hour crossing to get there. I would guess a better class of ferry would be needed to attract the masses.

There are ferries that run in the Med - which does get very choppy - which are robust enough.
Ferries that I regularly see along the Straits such as the Genoa-Tangiers vessels should do.

There are 2 ferry routes operating between Spain and Gran Canaria offering you combined total of 4 sailings per week. Trasmediterranea operates 1 route, Cadiz to Las Palmas which runs 1 time weekly. Fred Olsen Express operates 1 route, Huelva to Las Palmas which runs 2 times weekly.

The Cadiz Arrecife ferry route connects Spain with Lanzarote. Currently there is just the 1 ferry company operating this ferry service, Trasmediterranea. The crossing operates up to 1 times each week with sailing durations from around 28 hours 30 minutes.

Apparently, Armas Ferry Line has a weekly route from Huelva to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, duration 38 hours.

There are certainly plenty of motorhomes around the islands these days - mostly Spanish registered, also a number of Germans and a handful of Brits seem to make it there. There are plenty of inter-island ferries, so fairly easy to explore the whole archipelago once there. Each of the 7 main islands is very different and there is much fine coastal and mountain scenery. And still quite a few wild camping opportunities, although it sounds from the OP's report that the authorities want to regulate the situation a bit more. They appear to see the growth of popularity as both a concern and an opportunity - which is perhaps not a surprise.

Yorick will tell you how long it takes, I have known someone that went, but he is not on here now, so can't Google it because I can't remember his user name, a welshman professional free loader and kicked off when he was in photo that was put on, it had to be removed 😁 we was going to meet up somewhere and he said don't bring your generator. 😁🤔 Bob

There are certainly a few Funsters that have taken their vans and reported back on here. (y)

I've done the Armas ferry 6 return trips. Cadiz to Arrecife 35 hours.
Huge boat and no ill effects from weather.
Free food all the way and good kennels for pets.

The islands are amazing. Can wild camp freely on here and Fuertaventura. Plenty of camp sites on other islands.

And weather is brilliant :)

We've been to the Canaries several times on package holidays and have always hired cars in order to explore. We particularly liked the mountainous interior of Gran Canaria. Fabulous walking there and great weather. Would love to go back in the motorhome.

How much is the ferry cost, please?
Must be expensive if it takes 36 hours, thats a lot of diesel for a ship that size, so I would have a stab at £550/650, am I close?

It was about a grand return.
But then it's free camping here. And it's a lovely sunny 23c today :)

I bet that is each way at least. I would think that there is a fair bit of freight that use the crossing so plenty of customers so not have to discount.

I think last time I had a brief look at the ferry cost, discounts were available if you were a Spanish or Portuguese resident. Yes that price could have been one way, maybe that's why Yorick is still there:giggle:
Cheers all.

I would definitely do it. Have thought about it before but lack of facilities has put us off. We don't like roughing it :oops2:

Lol. The residents discount is for the persons, not the vehicles.

And I sold the camper in UK and flew back here.

Currently without a van, but will get one in the future.

Yes I have seen these when we fly there, and also comments about how friendly people are, giving water etc. Not for us all the time though, my wife likes her home comforts too much. I can persuade her to do the odd night wilding so if there were a few aires, the odd campsite in addition to the wild camping spots, we would do it no problem. Must be great island hopping around.

We did a 7 day island tour on the bikes last year as far as La Gomera.
Only 300€ for ferries and hotels.

In the early 80's we were in Andorra in June on our way back from Spain, I got talking to an older guy on the campsite and that's where he had just come from, he said he spent most of his winters there.
