North West Scotland

We had a 3 week trip up to Scotland of which we had 15 days in the North West (from Glencoe to Durness) of which 14 days were lovely sunshine and NO MIDGIES!!!

1. & 2. Glencoe campsite
3. Ullapool
4. Port A Bhaigh Campsite, excellent small campsite near Achiltibuie
5. Clachtoll campsite near Lochinver
6. "Wild" camping Dronan pier near Kinlochbervie
7. Sango Sands campsite Durness

Interesting you say that Jim - up in Sutherland there are a couple of ruined inland villages and lots of ruined crofts as a result of the clearances.

Often the inhabitants were driven out to the coast and left to try to scratch a living there

The Highlands is littered with ruined crofts.. so sad, it was nothing short of ethnic cleansing.. a process we associate with despotic dictators ..not our Gt Britain..

which has a lot to be ashamed of.. The Gaelic culture was almost wiped out ..

We were there at Easter and had fab weather, stayed on some of your sites too. We went up to Durness and back down via Achiltibuie and Applecross. 10 nights and only 2 on campsites - our favourite holiday destination

which has a lot to be ashamed of.. The Gaelic culture was almost wiped out ..

You should see how many there are in Shetland. But at least the Shetland Isles Council were (hopefully still are) quite generous with grants to bring them back to life. The biggest drawback is the croft house end up smaller due to the damp proof lining that goes inside. Most were not exactly big to begin with!

Still nice to see life being put back in!

yes.. but no doubt many will be bought by wealthy 'outsiders' for holiday homes or lets..

but the people will never be back, nor the culture return.. that is what is sad..

also, much of Scotland, huge estates owned by absent landlords who have no interest or have even visited Scotland..

the 'land reform Scotland act' stopped well short of making land ownership equitable.. and accessible..

Incidentally we used the caravan park at Tebay services in Cumbria on the M6 both on the way to Scotland (Glencoe 1st stop) and on the way back from to Lee on the Solent - at around 300 miles each way it is roughly half way from the Skye bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.

It is a very good stopover with a hotel & bar on site!!

We did a very similar route accept that we stayed at Glen Nevis and Arisaig on the way home - we were away for three weeks and got home on the 2nd June and had the best Highland weather we have every had (we go to the Highlands most years in May). We must have crossed paths at some point!

The Lowland Clearances happened 100 to 200 years before the well documented Highland Clearances. We live in a Lowland Clearance Village - now only 20 houses..... at it's prime local legend says it was home to the Kings of Scotland and de facto capital.

We spent from May 23rd to June 4th from Glencoe to Durness staying one or two days at each site then moved to where I was "born & bred" Portmahomack (a small village near Tain on the East coast of Ross & Cromarty) where we camped in my cousins garden until heading South on June 7th

Yes but SNP were in a minority in government, and the others would not allow a more radical act, as the SNP said the wanted. Then when in power they didn't act to fundamentally act, instead gave funding for community purchase of land. Now the greens hold the whip hand watch what they propose, as this was a main feature of their election promises.

My next destination is Scotland after i see my new grand daughter born , due aug 4th . Got a big guilt trip going on from my son whose 28 and earns more money than i ever did for going on a road trip even i only used to see him every month or so.

Never been to Scotland @scotjimland

Ive read about the clearances and as an English man who is half Welsh it was like a genocide or ethnic cleansing .
