Rally The Falkirk Wheel Fri 20May 2016

Have a great time everyone, shame I'm down south until 23rd, that weekend I'll be at Devizes then Clumber so maybe pass some of you on the way home.(y)

Interestingly my sat nav says that when coming form Kent it is quicker to go up the A1 then cross on the A66 (at Scotch Corner) onto the the M6 and then the M74, rather than continuing up the Easy Coast and going past Edinburgh.

It probably is at this time of year, but the A66 can be awful, perpetual road works, tractors, army vehicles nowhere near enough dual carriageway (but it is improving each year) your average speed across that bit will be well down, but the views there and on the M74 are good, we came home that way last year (which led to my navigational misdemeanour :D), but I like to stop over in the borders, so will probably do A1 A68 which is a nicer drive than the A1 all the way up to Edinburgh

Are all of those suitable? Or would it be better to go further towards the centre of Falkirk on the A883 and turn right directly onto Glenfuir Road (B816)?

Yes it would be better to go this way.

If we decide to go to Hawick we could use the A68 and then the A6088. Are they OK for motorhomes?

Also we could then go on to Moffat, using the A7 and then A708 - again are they both OK for motorhomes? Probably use the C&CC site at Moffat.

At the moment our itinerary is to leave Monday a.m. and go via M11 and A1. Stop somewhere Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire way Monday night. Then Hawick maybe Tuesday night and Moffat Wednesday night, and then drive to Falkirk on the Thursday. You can see that we are on a gentle meander rather than rush up the motorway drive.

Has anybody got the coordinates and info on the Aire in Hawick please?

Having said all that, knowing us the plans will go out the window Monday afternoon and we will do something different.

Yes they are fine but windy at times. Around 40 min to Hawick from leaving A68

@irnbru, will need to restock food & alcohol coming into Falkirk, can you point us in the direction of the supermarkets please.:)

Haha and on that subject can anyone planning to join us for a bbq on Fri night bring some food to share, a bbq , or some coals, or kitchen roll, paper plates etc.
There is a large Tesco nearby and an Asda on the other side. Depending on which way you are coming?..you will no doubt pass one or other.

Lol I'd just logged on to ask similar question about shops.....we run a bit close to our max weight:Eeek: so wondered if there was a supermarket nearby or if we do end up in Hawick on the Thurs - is there anywhere there Sandra....we can bring the cadac & stuff.

@Debs - if my google map served me right, there's a sainsbury's or lidl close to Hawick.

I've also noticed that there's only space for 6 motorhomes, anyone know how many are planning on staying at Hawick?

Theres an Iceland directly opposite the aire in Hawick, and a LIdl and Sainsburys about a 3 minute walk away

Its not a problem if theres more than 6, just use another space. Its a large carpark. You may well get a kilted greeter around 10am welcoming you to the town.

Could be a case for Hawick & stock up by the looks of it.

Lisa, us probably on Tuesday night. There also appears to be a Morrisons there.

Also - it is a large car park - does anybody know if we can park elsewhere overnight on the car park overnight?

my way up to Hawick would via the A68 but coming off the A1 at Newcastle airport, not sure the road number there, but a few miles past the airport you come to Ponteland, theres a Waitrose there on the left with enough room to park (y), will probably be there myself mid afternoon

edit - I am still planning to be in Hawick Thursday night

double edit - @Debs this is the closest we have got to meeting up, don't go ducking out on me now :)(y)

If the allocated bays are full just use a normal bay. Its a big enough car park with a water tap and toilets. There are restrictions on a Fri night and for the horse gala but those wont apply to you so you will be fine. If you fancy a pint the town is literally on your doorstep and as soon as you leave the car park on foot via water tap there is a like miners social club you can get a drink in. 1min and you are in your bed. :-). Also on the edge of a lovely park with museum. Great for a chill dog walk.

You got it in one @DavidG58 Had the ceilidh music on prancing about and driving mum bonkers. Oh well I need to put up with her line dancing music often enough. I'm starting to look forward to it now and the forecast doesn't seem to bad either. (y)

can we line dance and ceilidh alternately, keep the peace with Mum and give me a chance to move a little less for a bit :)
