I am currently investigating getting the Gasglow system fitted to my Autotrail Apache, I have been quoted £535 for 1 x 11 & 1 x 6 kg tanks plus stainless steel pipes and auto changeover is this value for money or can I get it cheaper? And are they worth it?

I had mine done for more or less that with 2x11kg bottles

Its easy peasey to do yourself so you don't need to pay for others to do it so long as you have some basic DIY skills. also have a look at 'Gas-it' which is virtually identical to Gaslow (I think they use some of the same kit) but is cheaper.

That sounds expensive yes but it is GASLOW or the same product in a different colour is GASIT.
I fitted my own on my previous van and found Hamilton gas supplies to be cheapest even over GASIT. The handwheel POL hose is because I upgraded one bottle at a time and retained a calorlite for some months before buying a second gaslow

wouldnt an under sling tank be a better option that way you gain the locker space

Underslung tanks will need specialised fitting and could add massive £££ to the cost.

Techno100 i have a small 6kg system fitted....... whats needed if i want to an extra 11kg bottle.

cheers Bobby

Cylinder no.2 plus second bottle interconnect hose.

If you have room and can afford it, the underslung tank is a good idea. We don't have the room underneath for a large tank and have loads of locker space anyway. Sticking with Calor at the moment though as cannot justify spending the money for a Gaslow. Other products are available but as per another thread, when I costed it out, Hamilton gas products were the cheapest even compared to stako tanks

Why not get one refillable and have one calor as a spare. The great thing about refillables is you can refill at any point so dont need to empty before filling. I would try one refillable first and save on the second and the changeover system should cost about £ 180 for gasit is it worth that much extra for the second bottle !!!

Unless your going away for months at a time go for an 11kg and a standard 6 calor lite as backup. .easy to add to and we have never been caught short

I fitted the GasIt system. Did everything myself except the hole in the side. Got my local dealer to do that one pipe, he charged me £60. The system was on offer from GasIt at £320 with all the adapters. The ease of use compared to Calor is worth every penny

On 'ukcampsites ' in free ads, 11&6 kg Gaslow for sale for £180 on 28/8 so maybe sold but worth a call.

Agree with Techno Hamiltons are the cheapest if you decide to go with Gaslow

It cost me around £200 to fit a Gaslow 11kg cylinder, filler, pipes and connections about a year ago.
I have a Calor 6kg bottle as standby and the Gaslow bottle costs around £15 to refill in the UK and about £10 in France.
It is relatively easy to fit with minimal tools needed but you must get a qualified Gas fitter to test the system.
I went to a local Caravan garage and they checked it for free.

Whilst I appreciate that you felt the need to have your system checked, it is not IMV a necessity ... if you can replace gas cylinder hose you can certain fit a refillable gas bottle system! The 'hardest' part isn't anything to do with the gas itself, but with the fitting of the filling inlet due to having to cut a hole in your pride and joy, or alternatively fitting a bracket inside the locker (which is what I've always done).

So far my single 11kg bottle has been in 3 MHs, each installed by me without a problem (well, not if you ignore the fact that I had to 'hit' the bottle with a lump hammer for our current PVC to get it into the locker ... really I did ... but it wasn't as 'bad' as it seems! :D). The most awkward part in reality was deciding where to put the bracket and fiddling about with the nuts/bolts to secure it which isn't easy in a locker! We've had a single 11kg bottle now since 2009 and have never run out which has been a good thing as we don't have a 'back-up'. :)

Yes it is sold direct to the public for anyone competant to install. If you're no competant it is a different matter.

I was quoted around £430 for underslung gas tank and am thinking long and hard about it - that is to fit yourself though

Fitting an underslung system is more complicated and I'm not sure the 'benefit' outweighs the fact that it is OVER DOUBLE the cost of the equivalent sized bottle installation ... if you need extra locker space have a look at Beeny boxes instead which are larger and more useful than a gas locker for extra storage and as far as I'm aware cheaper than a 'fitted' underslung system ... obviously so long as you have the space for a beeny.

Galsow is a great system that is now recognised more and more throughout Europe as fitted filling system.
My advise would always (if it can) for the filler to be mounted on the outside of the vehicle (skirt etc..) This will allow easiness when filling and helps with the possible confusion on what you are filling if you are opening lockers (especially with language barriers getting in the way on the continent!!). When and if you decide to sell the vehicle, Gaslow offer a replacement new filler for your new van meaning that no hole is left in the side of the vehicle for the new owner. At the same time a blanking cap is provided for the tail end of the fitting on the filler that you have left on the side of the motorhome.

A typical kit quoted by Gaslow isn't always the best way to approach an installation (and also not the most cost effective way) as every locker layout and sizes are different.. try and pick an installer that has every available size hose and relevant 90-degree fittings/ adapters etc,, on the shelf so on the day of installation they can come out with you and pick what suits best to save you money and looks a neater installation.

Installation time should not be any longer than two hours even when cutting holes in the side of a van..

At the same time make sure you don't get conned into a cheap kit with rubber hoses because if you don't install the system with the stainless hoses offered, then your warranty will be void by Gaslow!!

Gaslow have there own price list that is given to every dealer and customer.. If there are other companies out there that wish to uncut what Gaslow quote, then make sure you look at what they can offer with on going customer support and reputation and at the same time make sure they can actually fill the system on site once its installed ;) (this is as you would expect to test for leaks and defects!!)

Remember you are halving on average, the cost of Gas compared to standard Calor prices, so in time it will pay itself off and that's not taking into account the convenience factor of being able to top up whenever you need to and can!

I wouldn't install anything less and haven't than Gaslow on any of my vans!! (y)

P.S............. I would also spend the additional £20 per bottle for the new R67 EU French approved bottles if you are traveling the continent.. The 11kg R67 are available now and the 6KG and 3KG version are available mid-late October..

I've just had a shuftie at the 'new' cylinder and can't see why you would pay more for it when it actually has less warranty! It only has 10 years instead of 15 years ... it doesn't make sense especially when the original one is European approved anyway!

We've just ordered the gasit equivalent 4 hole cylinder. Why? Because of the construction of the valve you can drive with it on without the mega expensive truma drive safe reg and rupture hose system. Ours is a panel van conversion and not having to open the rear door (with the bikes on) everytime we stop and want to switch the fridge over to gas is a blessing, especially when it is peeing down with rain. Damp bedding is not great. Those with a coachbuilt and a separate locker for the gas might not worry about it so much, but for us having to open the full rear door with bikes on everytime it is a bit of a pain.

So these types of cylinders do have advantages over the others but I can see your point about the discrepancy in the warranty period.

The previous systems were recognised in the EU but not approved.. but i may be wrong?!

Also as a new perk, the R67 bottles now have an accurate clear levels gauge that can be viewed side on, where the old gauges were rubbish and can only be guessed as a rough indicator.. (Hence why Gaslow don't sell them and if you broke one they would just send a FOC one out!!!)

lets be honest the system is designed to be a convenience and for the sake of £40.00 to upgrade I would like the clear certainty that on my travels, where ever i find a convenient place to re-fill where ever I am, I wont get in a potential disagreement with a french/EU fuel attendant (cause to be frank I cant speak French and neither can the wife and asking for a baguette is as far as my French vocab goes!!o_O).

Also as far as im aware they are going to discontinue the previous bottles anyway.. but time will tell..

Do remember that installing these Truma impact rupture shut-of-valves is a personal choice preference and not a legal requirement as with any gas bottle installation..

BES..do a shut off valve that fits propane bottles for14.02 quid part no. 12673. multi purpose safety fitting .

Only fitted 1 x Gas-it 11kg bottle myself, 1 hour tops. We have never even got below half a tank, as there are plenty of places that sell gas abroad and we top up wherever we see one.. Keep the Cadac beside the bottle in the gas locker.. Sorted !! Mitch..
