The 2.8 is a relatively old engine now and 10W40 semi synthetic is the correct oil for it. The 3.0 litre engine is a totally different bucket of bolts and 5W30 fully synth or 5W40 fully synth is the correct oil for it, low ash (sometimes called low SAPS) is a must for any engine running with a DPF which yours doesn't have. For my 2.8 HDI it states do not use 5w40 but 10w40 only??
Yes it does. 5/30 is too thin for it. Always use the correct grade to minimise wear and oil usage.Does it matter much if I put 5/30 or 10/40 oil in my 2.8 hdi engine. ??

2.8 HDI is the same as the Fiat 2.8 JTD so as above 10W40 semi synthetic is the correct oil for it.Does it matter much if I put 5/30 or 10/40 oil in my 2.8 hdi engine. ??
My modern engine has done 9000 without a top up and my (non classic) exhaust did not fall off eitherDo these 'modern' engines ever have to be topped up? My basic old 2.5TD never, never needs to be topped up and the same goes for my 1.6HDI engine car. Am I just extremely lucky?
and my (non classic) exhaust did not fall off either
