Will tell you exact specification in the Fiat manual, it's important to use the oil specified by the manufacture
Could ring a fiat professional dealer and give your Reg from which they can confirm the specc
My van came with a small top up bottle from new, have you checked the tool kit that came with van

Done 24,000 miles in ours since new in three years, same engine and not had to top up - although I do change the oil every year.

Just heard back from Fiat dealer and he suggests 5W/30 Fully sysnthetic, low ash oil. They stock Selenia WR PE which will match the one used at the factory. Apparently the Low Ash element is critical for vehicles running the newer engines with anti-pollution filters etc.

Excellent value...enough for a couple of oil changes.
5ltrs of this will normally retail at around £29

direct from an official merc dealer.

5/30 low ash
I use this in my merc engined chrysler.

The 2.8 is a relatively old engine now and 10W40 semi synthetic is the correct oil for it. The 3.0 litre engine is a totally different bucket of bolts and 5W30 fully synth or 5W40 fully synth is the correct oil for it, low ash (sometimes called low SAPS) is a must for any engine running with a DPF which yours doesn't have.

Do these 'modern' engines ever have to be topped up? My basic old 2.5TD never, never needs to be topped up and the same goes for my 1.6HDI engine car. Am I just extremely lucky?

My modern engine has done 9000 without a top up and my (non classic) exhaust did not fall off either ;)

I'm a newbie
I don't & never will own a vehicle with a DPF, When they were first fitted, they were lauded as the next step in zero emissions, but when a proper scientific study was carried out, they found that the DPF actually increased the amount of harmful particles, that were found to be floating in a cities air.
The reason is because the DPF traps the larger particles, thus the smaller sub microscopic particles were still getting through, these are the ones that float & are ingested by anyone breathing city air.
These micro particles used to cling to the larger ones & fall to the ground but the DPF now prevents this from happening!!!

The catalyser however is a very good devise that does what it's supposed to!

By the way I only ever use 5w/50 full synthetic motorsports racing oil in all my vehicles.
