@Debs , so sorry and shocked to hear about Les. We haven't been on Mhf much lately and missed this awful news.
We have only met once down at Bagwell and remember you both wearing fantastic fancy dress outfits with Les deservedly winning with his psychedelic flares and frizzy wig. Our condolences go out to you and hope you are coping with what must be a huge adjustment in your life.

Morning all.

I just wanted to do a little update as Lu @oddsocksnflagpoles & myself were at Nottm City Hospital yesterday afternoon trying to sort out what is happening with the op to have her BAHA (bone achored hearing aid) fitted.

I rang the Critical Care Unit to find out if there would be someone around who nursed Les as they work such odd shift rotas and I didn't want to walk in & not recognise anyone. I arranged to go in around 3.

It wasn't an easy thing to do but I felt I needed to do it and to personally thank those staff that were so wonderfully supportive and caring during Les's last days. Their care made made things just a tiny bit easier to bear and there were plenty of laughs amongst the tears.

When I arrived there was a half dozen on duty and had gathered to wait for me to arrive which I found very touching but typical of this great bunch of folks.

I took in some nice biscuits & chocolates, one of Phil @SC 05 OUT s beautiful cards & presented them with a cheque which was from donations. I've asked that this is used for patient comforts in the hope that future families experience the same care & support and it helps their loved ones recovery.

I told them all about odd socks, biker boys escorting Les's coffin, flagpoles and a very relaxed, chilled out wake. I told them that I hoped he'd think that we did him proud. I think we did.

The 2nd receipt is for chqs sent to the funeral director and will be forwarded to Critical Care once 30 days have elapsed.

So a fantastic total of £1156.00 was donated by lots of very kind friends and family.

I would like to thank those funsters that donated on behalf of the family - your support and help have been amazing and I know we'd be in a very different place if it wasn't for you lot.

The next few months will still be difficult as the coroner is deciding whether an inquest is needed. This is all to do with the initial hospital & their response that Les was admitted to. In the mean time I still cannot register his death so it could feel like a long winter.

Visiting the ward again is another step forward Debs in the grieving process. Good to hear there were so many staff waiting for you. A great amount raised for which I am sure they were really grateful. Sorry to hear about the issues with the death certificate, but if there is an inquest in the future you will hopefully be in a better frame of mind to deal with it. As always small steps, take care. xx

@Debs I am not sure that a "like" was the right response to your post, so I put a "thanks" instead! Stay styrong and look after yourself and your family and have as good a Christmas as you can. We hope to see you next year on a meet or two, where we can have a chat.

Having met with Debs yesterday and written to her this evening she has asked me to copy the same piece on here so here goes.......

Alright, here goes. I'm old. What that means is that I've survived (so far) and a lot of people I've known and loved did not. I've lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, dad, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbours and a host of other folks. I have no children and I can't imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here's my twopenn'orth.

“I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don't want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don't want it to “not matter”. I don't want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar was deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life and scars are only ugly to people who can't see.

As for grief. You'll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you're drowning, with the wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it is some physical thing, maybe it is just a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe it's a person who is also floating. For a while all you can do is float; stay alive.

In the beginning the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you with out mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don't even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks maybe months, you'll find that the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what's going to trigger the grief, it might just be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything...and the wave comes crashing. But in between the waves there is life.

Somewhere further into this voyage, and it's different for everyone, you find the waves are only 80 feet tall or 50 feet tall and while they still come they are further apart. You can see some of them coming, an anniversary or Christmas, or a favourite TV programme. The thing is you can see it coming and for the most part you can prepare yourself. And when it washes over you you know that somehow you will again come out the other side, soaking wet maybe, spluttering, still hanging on to that tiny piece of wreckage, but you'll come out.

Take it from an old guy, the waves never stop coming and somehow you don't really want them to, but you will learn that you'll survive them and other waves yet to come. If like me, you're lucky, you will have lots of scars from lots of loves and lots of shipwrecks too”.

Pretty good, ain't it?............ Griff

@Popeye
Thanks for posting this Griff, so true.
And thank you and Jackie, and all the team that worked so hard on the New Forest Meet. It was obviously a sign of how much people enjoyed themselves judging by the fantastic amount that was raised and kindly donated.
It means alot.

No I must disagree there Debs, I think the key was getting the wine and cheese on the first night (#everyonewaspissed) Robert's Rum session on the second (#everyonewaspissed) and quiz night everybody drank to lighten the load (#everyonewaspissed) for the next day on the way home.

The morale of this story, don't go anywhere near the fun buddies listed on the New Forest meet thread.
