How do I look at the co ordinates of an aire online. Ive opened google maps but I cant seem to get it to go to the co ordinates, in fact I cant see the degree sign either to use on keyboard.
How does everyone else do it please.
I'm excited so would love to see some views and even possible streetviews etc of the aires Im looking at.
This is how to get the degree symbol on a pc...talk about complicated but it works

If you would like to make the ° symbol when typing, you can use these methods: On PCs - hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypadon the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248 When you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there

started in a minivan 1970's when I could fit into it.
I,ve had a free trial download of the campercontacts app http://www.campercontact.com/en/content/app and found it to be pretty user friendly. So paid up and got the full version with offline capability especially if you have gps on your tablet etc.if you plot a route roughly where you're travelling then find some aires along the way if you like via the online site and choose a few favourites, these can easily be imported into the app.get up an aire you like and tap on the contacts tab and you'll see all you want in the way of coordinates both in degrees and decimal as well as detailed info with pics if available.

Google seems to work better if you convert the degrees and digital minutes (N50°59.611, E2°7.910) used in the book to digital degrees (N50.99532 E2.13183) I use a free app on my phone to do the conversion.

The coordinates I've used there are the last ones on the app so they will be for the Pet Passport building at Calais.
I have an Android app called GPS Converter, which can use its own input keypad, complete with the degree symbol.

The above coordinates (N50°59.611, E2°7.910) took me to the dump point for the Gravelines aire by the Gendarmerie - at least it did with the built in map - when I typed the decimal conversion listed above directly into Google maps, it put me into the adjoining field.

Any idea why 'all the aires' use that format?
It's probably what their GPS was set to when they started. There are at least three different formats, four if you count the +/- instead of W/E. Accuracy should just be a question of how many decimal points are used, if there are enough it will be accurate but it is just possible Google maps strips off some decimal digits no matter how accurately you enter it. Alternatively, the website used to convert a degree, minutes, second coord may not do so with sufficient accuracy because it truncates the answer.

That's because there is a typo, the North figure should be 50.99352 not 50.99532.

Try this one:

Broken Link Removed

You just put the numbers in the boxes and don't need to worry about the sign.
Just tried it but can't see how to enter N50°59.611 ?

Just found out you don't need to enter the degree symbol in google maps just leave a space.
If you want to find N50°59.611, E2°7.910 just enter N50 59.611 E2 7.910 into the google maps search box and it works, no converter required!

Dunno. I don't have any Android products to try it on. I just picked it out as one that doesn't look like you need to enter the degree symbol
Just found this android converter works well and will open the result in the Google maps app

That reminds me - I didn't post a link to the one I used.
Here it is.

Mind you, as we now know that Google maps doesn't need the degree character, it may not be needed as much as we thought.

In theory, my Sat Nav will accept most options, the main difficulty being to work out which one it is expecting at any given time.

Another website worth a look is
http://www.searchforsites.co.uk/
put in a place name and it gives you various aire /some campsites & wild spots within a 10 mile radius ( you put the radius in to suit yourself) then go into the aire & it comes up with details ( prices not all 100% accurate or up to date )

This is a back to front tip that I discovered...
On Google maps, put your cursor on a location that you want the co-ordinates for; right click with your mouse and select 'Whats Here?' and the coordinates are displayed.

Only works on PCs & laptops unless someone knows how to 'right click' on a tablet?

The degrees never change whatever system you use. If you have decimal degrees following then think of your clock face and what would be quarter past (15) half past (30) quarter to (45) are the eqauls of the 100 split the same way (25), (50, (75).
This also applies if you have minutes an seconds they too need to be parts of a hundred minute clock face.
It may not get you right to where the coordinates were taken. But it will get you near enough to spot a few motorhomes.

Sorry to disagree but they do not interchange, if you put the numbers from one into the other system you can be miles out

Not quite what I was trying to explain. The basis is that rather than split minutes and seconds into 60 you use 100 and I think you find that 30 minutes becomes .5 degree and vice versa .5 degree becomes 30 minutes. Though just why someone has to tamper with 60 minutes in a degree and 60 seconds in a minute defeats me.

AS said the best way to see around aires is with this site, although not all aires are on it. Its not always possible to see into the aires on street view unless Google has sent the street view car close to it.

We found this out the hard way a couple of years ago , after many arguments and getting in the middle of nowhere , we tried to find a campsite in southern France out of the acsi book, well we parked outside the camp we should have wanted but the sat nav insisted we had two miles to go, so thought must be two camps with the same name and carried on, when it decided we had reached our destination we were in something like a desert , so turned around and went back , cause when we got back they were full, well , long story short, after this I got on here and asked why, up until then we hadn't got a clue that there could be two or more ways of entering these coordinates, don't know why you would have two different systems of something that could be so vital in an emergency.

Sandra, you may have got a solution already but a "relatively" simply way of converting is (assuming you have a calculator or on your mobi) -
North is +ve therefore South is -ve.
East is +ve therefore West is -ve.

If you have the co-ordinates as degrees : minutes : seconds (say N56d:00m:01s W3d:50m:30s) multiply the minutes by 60, 00 x 60 = 0 and 50 x 60 = 3000 and add this to the seconds. 0+1 = 1 and 3000 + 30 = 3030. Divide each by 3600, 1 / 3600 = 0.000278 and 3030 / 3600 = 0.841667. Add each of these to the degrees and you get N56.000278 W3.841667 (or 56.000278 -3.841667).

You should recognise the place.

If you've got access to Excel I can e-mail you a simple file where you type in the co-ordinates and it will return the decimal degrees for you. Let me know if it would be of use.
