What's a source code, and why is it so valuable to the hackers?

A computer program is written in a computer language like C++ or Java, which other programmers can read and understand. That is called the source code. It is then 'compiled' into assembly language or machine code, which is all but impossible to understand. The machine code file is released/sold and is what the computer actually uses when running the program. The original computer program source code is not released/sold but is kept securely by the programmer. If a hacker can get get the source code, he can understand exactly how the program works, and can look for vulnerabilities and exploits.
