Had it serviced for its first service 10 months ago at a Fiat Professional approved motorhome dealer. I noticed a big blob on the drive, assumed it was from another car. But no, it's the van. I then ran the engine for about 10 mins, and there's enough oil on the drive to run. Should I take it back to the said dealer, or is there a chance that all the oil blow out getting there (it's about 40 miles)?

i would check the filter is not loose first, also, i had a filter that developed a tiny hole in the filter itself it looked like it was from a crease caused by a strap being used to tighten the filter.

check the oil level too see how much has been lost.

its a million dollar question......5 miles can be too far if the leak is bad.. or if the filter is loose and gets looser...

a few checks needed before any real decision. if you cant do it yourself i would take it locally just to get the filter tightened or confirmed its nothing more.

That's what I was worried about. Isn't it supposed to be done with a torque? I can tighten it by hand, but it does look hard to get your hand up to it.

This the explains a lot about the issue, assuming you have the type with a stew on top not the canister type.
Mine started leaking about 3m after replacing the element and tightening to the correct torque (30nm) with the correct fixture.
I replaced it with a new complete unit, fingers crossed.

Tightening by hand might just work to get you to the garage.

My theory is that despite correct assembly the plastic body and nut are made from a filled resin which can creep or relax.
Be aware this is not purely a Fiat problem it is an issue with the filter supplier.

Tighten it with both hands as hard as you can. The tool is used for getting it off.

I think I'll just tighten it as best I can and take it to a nearby garage. We are going to Portugal in a couple of weeks, might as well get new oil and new filter, don't trust the present filter, the rubber gasket could have blown.
