130kg of Cocaine plus the normal stuff needed for two adults and two teenagers would have put them well over the limit if it was a 3500kg vehicle.

I wonder if that is why they were pulled in a Service Station half way between the Spanish border and Bordeaux.

That said, I got pulled in a 7500kg luton van in a Service Station in the middle of France with 2,000 litres of wine on board.
We had a reasonable explanation, plus all the receipts, for carrying that much wine, and we were allowed to proceed.

Lesson to be learned here.
When shipping cocaine through France, don't use the toll roads, don't stop at the motorway service stations.

(Also don't have a party of 5 with 5 different nationalities!, it may 'look' like a family, but I doubt they even had a common language!)

The french douanes/customs patrol a lot of the roads near Spain. We were stopped once in the car, from memory they were looking for cigarettes which were much cheaper in Spain.
The cocaine was pretty well hidden i think so wonder if they had inside knowledge? Then again if they had a dog that would be trained for drugs as well as tobacco these days.
Travelling with two teenagers though they might have been glad to get caught

Many years ago my Uncle was on a bus Spain to UK (he refused to fly) and the bus was stopped just over the French border. Everything searched. Uncle smoked heavily (he died from smoking related illness) and had to explain why he had so many cigarettes. As he was chain smoking waiting to be questioned, during questioning and afterwards they did believe the cigarettes were for personal use and he would need to buy more before leaving France.

Yes. This is reckless and probably against the law without upplating their van. We should put them in touch with Dee at Van weight Engineering so they can safely smuggle cocaine in future.
