Any advice re wifi on the move? We've bought a HUAWEI mobile wifi device but no contract yet, plus how does it work? Cheers

We use Huawei mifi on 3. £8 a month for 20gig. Works well with current roaming situation but this is going to change.

We've got a Huawei 4G mifi on a 20Gb @ £9.00 a month contract and whilst it works, you won't be seeing 4G on it in Europe. We never got 4G, only 3G and that was in France/Belgium/Holland/Germany etc. As soon as we got off the shuttle back in Blighty, BING, 4G connection and super spritzy performance again .... just saying like :gum:

Just use your phone and tether to it. No need to buy another device to do what your phone is already doing.

Pretty sure Three have some lockdown on tethering and using other devices when abroad

Joe tethers to his phone usually but I've still got my 12g 12 month PAYG sim on 3 for my tablet which I'll use until the year is up. After that will tether to phone.

They used to restrict to 3G, ours has been fine the last couple of years and has been just as fast as it is at home.

I am with 3 mobile and no problems tethering plus it’s now 4G and you can switch to any of the 4 providers in spain.

now have 3 home hub and am taking it every where in van U.K. 20 mb Europe only 19 per month

Virgin 100GB contract with 50GB rollover. Just tether to your phone. I used 102GB in Dec. 4G everywhere in Spain. The UK need to get a grip, they are so far behind.

£10 per month

Me thinks I need to take a walk down the local Three store and get somethings clarified before we depart to Europe again .... our device connectivity and performance was little short of pants over the last excursion!

In the past we have used one of these stuck on a window and connected by cable to the mifi:

but connectivity was hit and miss, so we're getting one of these fitted:

not a cheap solution I admit.

My experience of the 3 store is that they know how to sell phones but nothing about mobile wifi. If you go into the Huawei web site with your wifi connected you can alter the settings. The password if unaltered is admin admin. You may need to set up roaming on the device.

Roaming definitely enabled across all devices. Even our iPhoneXR's were not seeing much 4G, just sitting on 3G and sometimes, 2G dependant upon where we were. I do admit though all sims were Three network

I am roaming 360 days a year with 3 mobile just use my phone as a router and had no problems at all.

My phone which we tether to is 5G enabled, should it ever happen.

Go into settings. Mobile data.
Network selection and switch off automatic
Then you can select one of the other providers.

So, I took the opportunity to take a walk into town at lunchtime and strolled into the Three shop. I asked about why I did not get 4G in any of the countries I travelled through (Belgium/France/Luxembourg/Germany/Austria) and was told that they "have different types of mast out there", that "you just can't get 4G in most of Europe", that "even on EE you won't get very good 4G coverage", that "in Spain there's hardly any 4G coverage at all ...." So, I shouldn't expect to get 4G in Europe when using either my MiFi dongle or Iphone XR then? "No, in fact, it is not guaranteed" .... "So how long have you had the dongle?"

I also asked about tethering in Europe and was told that there were no restrictions whatsoever on tethering your mobile and making shared use of your data allowance (need to check my paperwork as I am certain I was previously told I could not use my business mobile contract for tethering in the EU, hence why I brought a dongle)

At this point I said thank-you for your insight, I obviously was expecting a bit too much and I'll clearly have to rethink my options for data abroad  xsparks you weren't wrong! If I had let the lad waffle on any longer, he'd have sold me the latest and greatest widget for sure!!

I have 60gb on EE and 65gb on Virgin both pick up 4g most of the time. In the fair use policy on EE it says I can use 15gb when roaming. Now Virgin says in its fair. Use policy that whatever you use over the 4 months before you travel they will allow you to use that when roaming. From what I understand 3’s fair use policy is if you have unlimited data then you can use I think it’s 20gb when roaming, Although I’ve yet to be capped even though I’ve gone over these amounts. Best Wishes Tony

Yup, the THREE 20Gb cap is correct. I've gone over it and been charged a whump of extra coin over and above my monthly debit. My fault entirely, I failed to disable the auto-uploads of images from my Ipad, and having transferred Gb's of RAW data from my camera to check the images we had taken, they were then all streamed upline into the cloud, and yup, you've guessed, it back down again to another device that was also connected
