Why We Do what We Do...A Small Rant...

Strange how pictures remind one, I had taken a group on a January Ski trip to Val-d'isere and, while they were having lunch after a hard morning on the sloped, I decided that I would tackle a Black route without them.
Most of the slopes were devoid of people and I was by myself, surrounded by silence and mountains.
I stood at the top of this route, contemplating IF I should do it by myself when this strange feeling came over me.

Surrounded by all this mountain majesty, I felt about 6 INCHES tall!
All it would have taken was a chunk of rock, or avalanche, to breakaway from above me and I could have been lost forever.

Your picture reminds me of that experience.

Nature had gouged out that canyon and left it fascinating, could man I wonder? 🤔
I was at the top of the mountain in Switzerland. Staying on a stelplatz in Grimentz. £20 a night with unlimited electricity, water and discharge. That was after I turned down my customers offer of his chalet for £2,800 for a week.

I am up the top, took my helmet, gloves, goggles off. Sat eating a KitKat when these birds came hovering in the wind and pecked the crumbs out of my hand.

Looking around at the stunning scenery with just the wildlife for company. Priceless .

Then I sees this helmet ⛑️ come bobbing up out of the snow covered hillside. My daughter moaning because she thought I had fallen down some mountainside .

Happy days

If we didn’t have a Motorhome we would rarely go away. When son was small we did gites, static caravans, in France for three weeks. That was the only holiday. Then the caravan, so toured around and got away three weeks in the summer and a couple of other trips. Then the Motorhome, far more trips away. We have done a cruise, a rail holiday, a coach holiday. But now , it’s Motorhome or nothing. I don’t want someone else’s bed and I don’t like eating out.

Last year we flew to Spain for a week
I thought you drove there. Much better than ****ing about in airports.

{eating out] used to be 1 to 2 times a week but seems to have gone up to 3 to 4 times now, except in France where it's flipping expensive.
But one of the best reasons for going - I love French food.
It is a bad week if we only eat out 3 or 4 times.
Although simple Pain de campagne with Compte and Le vin du Sud-Ouest makes a good alternative.

Constant beakages and technical issues
That is part of the 'fun'. Two years downstream, I think I have now fixed most of the issues with our new Hymer.
But, we have still very much enjoyed our times away. Problems always have a workaround and I enjoy fixing things.

How are you getting water?. In France all those water units are shut down to avoid frost damage. That was my experience anyway.

There are some things we can do in a motorhome or get the same experience by hiring a static caravan, for example taking the grandkids to a Haven holiday camp. Motorhome is way cheaper tho.

But we like doing music festivals. We have tried them in a tent, never again. Too cold, too damp, too cramped, no facilities. So the motorhome is ideal for those. In fact if we didn't have our motorhome any more, we'd hire a MH for each festival. However, if / when we are bored with or too old for festivals, then the MH might be handed over to the kids to get use out of.

As an aside, we found a music festival which doesn't charge for camping in a MH, but charges anyone bringing a caravan. What a warm glow that gave us !

An advantage I find is that we carry all the condiments and cleaners etc we need.

In a rented house the first thing you have to do is go out and buy salt/spices/fairy liquid etc along with the food. All of which is left behind for the cleaner.

It's not what it is, it's what it allows you to do.

And I hate flying.

The last few rentals we’ve been in , those basics have been provided which was nice. I’m going to be cursing in May when we go to Scotland next when there’ll be nothing. It won’t be as bad as we can give it to our sons as both live there. They’ve only got 1 bed flats and we’re past squeezing in.

1st job for me when i get back is organise flights for our Nov/Dec/Jan trip.
Man-DXB-Brisbane-Perth-DXB-Man, that's some hours up there.
Don't bother doing the costing it's a lot. Cost a lot more to do those miles overland in a MH

It doesn't have to be "either or" does it?

As for it not being as enjoyable these days, it's only natural that familiarity takes the shine off anything. The original excitement of anything new wears off in time.

Do you find yourself...trying to explain to those that cannot grasp the delight of jumping in a trip ready CV/MH as to why you have spent such money on what is essentially a vehicle ? Do you try to make them grasp that 10 £7000 or 20 £3500 holidays per year over 10 years just doesn't compare? Meeting a nice family abroad you may stay in touch with for a few years is in no way comparble to being part of a community of like minded folk who, if you are on site and think "bugger i forgot...."...will lead to offers of "i've a spare"? How a "wotcha" can lead too a sharing of thoughts and ideas?

I think the one of the best parts is leaving home, not in a taxi to waste a few hours at the airport suffering stress and worry but, as soon as you start the engine, in the van or MH that you are free. Free to go where you like, stop where you like, drink in the sights sounds and culture where you like, not be tied by expectation or convention. Having tickets and transfers and an itinerary seems as though you've surrendered eveything to someone else and i prefer to see what happens, what's around the corner, or hey, that looks fun.

Be it Europe or the Isles...be it 5 in the morning or afternoon...passing each other with a wave of the hand or a lift of the finger will speak volumes. It speaks of an idea, a thought, a minset. We are tavellers, the wanderers, the unfettered. Not for us the must go places but for us the places we want, the places that
will in one way or another make us feel a litle bit more complete.

So rejoice. Those that understand will nod and agree, those that don't will, though they will never know or understand though you explain will not listen nor understand if you do. The road is open, you're free to roam, go and see where it takes you.
I have justified the expense of the van by pointing out that I can't resell a foreign holiday but I can resell the van if desperate.

Well said. A joy to read.

Fatmrg tried to convince a reluctant me that investing in a moho would "save" money in the long run. Despite knowing that it would in fact cost us an arm and a leg, I was jubilant to do so. Just because its so Flipping great.
Really. Just. In spite of. Regardless.
While we can.
I salute your rant.

to me that's like having bought a really expensive engagement ring, thinking it could be sold.
For me, either would have the same result :giggle:

I'm waiting for stories of Mohos burning out in the wilderness, with their dead owner inside.
Go out Viking style!

Oldrat...i should've made it clear 10 over 10 or 20 over 10 = a new van...

NorthernRaider..yep a few....and yes it was a bit gushy but that was due to why and how i bought the new van...

Nanniemate...tis only a school night for 9-5ers....

For all those with a thumbs up i thank you...for all those with a "hang on" i thank you.

I didn't post to have it writ in stone but to pass on how i feel...some agree, some don't. if i disagreed with everyone why am i here (sorry northernraider i hope i'm not too gushy)

No issue with the post for me. You can gush to your hearts content. The van works for us to for the trips we have not been able to do when we had the boat. Happy we moved to the van, darn sight cheaper and adds a new dimension to some of our exploring. But for any breaks in the Far East or S. America etc, the van is redundant. The Van is not a hobby for us but a means to a holiday experience the same as a cruise or touring using hotels which we still do even though we have the Van. Cost doesn't define our holiday enjoyment!

We've done the Med, Africa, Canada, Thailad etc etc....but home? the Isles?...we are sadly lacking in knowing where we live....home comforts....time to change especially near retirement.

Doesn't really bother me whether people 'get it' or not. Personally I enjoy a variety of holidays. We do long motorhome trips but also long haul flights to Asia or South America. I like staying in hotels to.

One thing I don't fancy is a cruise - well not one of those massive big things. However, I have 2 sets of friends that do several a year.

So it's not about price really. To be fair, we sometimes travel for 2 months in the van. A holiday staying in hotels for 2 months could be come pricey!!

Having given up the van :cry:for now we are considering a cruise again. Did several before we vanned and enjoyed them. And like some not bovvered what other people think of our choice.

I agree with the sentiments of the OP about the freedom of the MH when we go away and I have had my share of hotels from some not so good UK provincial ones care of BA for 5 years, to better international ones, over 8 years, including a round-the-world business trip of 5 weeks.

I thought that might be the end of hotels for me/us but in the last 6 years we have done short winter holidays in hotels twice: first was a skiing holiday in Andorra all-inclusive which was great but after a week we had had enough of hotel life; the second was 5 days at Christmas at The Phoenicia in Malta, which is at the top end of 5* and we really enjoyed it:smiley:, especially as it was the first time for Basia of being pampered after her Communist upbringing.

We do now not rule out hotels outside our normal MH travelling times. Not tried cruises yet - only one I really fancied was with the Hurtigruten line's service up the Norwegian coast, but that would have been taking the MH with 2-3 day stopovers, so not a traditional cruise, but sadly that has been scotched since I found out they will not take MHs. Might turn to cruises if one of us had to be in a wheelchair.

We did the Hurtigrten Bergen to Kirkeness and back. Really enjoyed it, really interesting, goes where the big cruise ships can’t. Being a ferry it was always interesting at ports to see what was being loaded and unloaded. No dressing up for dinner, little organised entertainment, trips out if you wanted them. We wouldn’t want to go on a big cruise ship. Did look at River cruises but others have told us they get a bit upset if you don’t do their organised trips.
We went to Prague by train, using Taylor Made Rail. Unescorted. Everything organised, hotel bookings, train tickets etc. we stayed at a couple of places on the way there. You can arrange to stay longer at different places if you want. So you are the. Free to explore as you want.

You forgot all the arseache that goes with it.

Jealous neighbours at home, or on site. Storage problems. Motorhome haters on the road. Constant leaks, breakages, technical issues. Insurance costs and issues. Poor availability of parts. Parking issues, height barriers, reduced ferry routes, increasing ferry/crossing costs. European access limits….UK Site fees !

It’s not as enjoyable for us as it was 20+ years ago.
You forgot to mention all the jolly wavers who blank you when pitched up
