Meddle with our own electrics in our motorhomes.

Fit invertors, add more 230-240v, solar, chargers, the lot !
When we cant do this at home. The rules for houses are goverened even tighter now with regs for safety, is there anything similar for motorhomes or would the insurance be invalid for any reason if we did too much.

Who can't?
We cant unless you are capable/suitable to tell if you must notify that any work carried out to alter any circuit or wiring will be able to comply to part P

so for instance, If I added Ive added a new circuit to the van alls good but to do at home, I see this is required

  • Who is responsible for making sure that electrical work in your home meets the requirements of Part P?

By law, the homeowner or landlord must be able to prove that all electrical installation work meets Part P, or they will be committing a criminal offence.

Local authorities have the power to make homeowners or landlords remove or alter any work that does not meet the requirements of the Building Regulations.

    What electrical work is notifiable?

From April 2013 electrical work in a dwelling, or associated with its surroundings, is notifiable to a local building control body where the work includes:
    • the installation of a new circuit, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage); or
    • the replacement of a consumer unit (fusebox); or
    • any alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a special location*, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage
  • *A special location is a room containing a bath or shower, swimming pool or a sauna heater.

An alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable only where carried out in the space surrounding a bath or shower.

An alteration or addition anywhere within a room containing a swimming pool or sauna heater is notifiable.

You can do it yourself, then ring the LA buildings department & tell them it needs testing: they have to supply someone to test it.

At cost, or get your own registered sparky to test.

I did all the wiring in my shed and workshop. Ring mains, lights, security lights and internal lights and fuse boxes but I couldn’t finish it by connecting to the outlet at the house.
The electrician that did our house re wire did it as a favour. He approved of the way my wiring was done but said he was holding no liability for it.

Most domestic circuits are very basic and simple to do
Get it wrong and you could simply kill someone
12V I was trained on am happy with.
240V and gas I understand but I'm happy to pay someone qualified to work on
