Here's a budget alternative to a pop top roof on your van with an informative video https://www.decathlon.co.uk/landing/rooftop-tent/_/R-a-a330032v?SPMID=ULOzhC-ZdDuFyR7HNxf_4g&PMSRC_CAMPAIGN=CMP_025797&utm_medium=email&utm_source=decathlon_united kingdom&utm_campaign=transactional_20201106_rooftoptentprelaunch - limited stock to order now & delivered in March at £499.99 with 5 year guarantee. Claimed to be the lightest roof tent on the market & not to put any strain on the top of the roof plus it packs away into an easy to carry bag - clever stuff! The tarp. sun shade, ladder & airbed are all included too. Main website link https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/rooft...ack-2-p/_/R-p-313004?mc=8575763&c=GREEN_KHAKI

Interesting idea. May have to be careful of the roof loadings. On cars the roof rack often has limits of about 75Kg. Might be a tad more on some vans designed for commercial use.
