Hi all finally bought our first motorhome after 12 months on here..
I have read the thread 'which club to join
But would specifically like to know which club would be best to join in order to access cs or cl type sites whilst touring Scotland
Any advice much appreciated
Thank you in advance

As you can join both CCC and CAMC for the cost of one tankful of diesel, I am not sure why you would want to choose just one? We use both and find having the wider choice of sites, CS and CL works well for us.

We are also members of both.

Although membership is not cheap anymore as @ericroy says, membership of both is less than the price of one tank of diesel. For the freedom that having membership of both gives you, particularly if you use CL type sites, it is still worthwhile.

@Liverpoollass
Sandra if you have a look on somewhere like search for sites and have a look at the areas you want to tour and it will show you both clubs sites, this should give you an idea what club would suit you best.

We are in the CMC and so far never really had any problems finding somewhere to stay.

I agree with Wendy @CWH

We are members of both clubs and Britstops. When you take the savings into account it’s not that expensive in the grand scheme of things and gives you lots of choice and geographical coverage.

I live up here on the NC500 at Cromarty Firth.

We are not members of any club, except this one, if you want to stay virtually anywhere in the Highlands membership of any club is not necessary. We have toured all over Scotland and North of England and from experience CL and CS sites will let you on without any membership.

Join a club if you want, but apps like https://www.facebook.com/groups/246972858789245/ will show you hundreds pf places to stay.

But which ever way you go, enjoy it, have a great time and if wild camping, as John Muir says

Another vote for both clubs, you can never have too many campsites at your disposal when you need them.

really no need for either club. more sites independent of either than members. use pitchup or ukcampsites to search.

Personally I'd choose the tank of diesel and bin the club's.

My wife is always worried about security so feels more comfortable staying on a Club site. We are members of both the CMC and CCC.

By the way, do a bit of research before wild camping. We once "wild camped" behind the Green Welly Stop (Tyndrum) overnight on a Friday, to be woken up at 4:30 the next morning by a car entering the gravel carpark. In an hour there were about 60 cars/vans/camper vans etc. People shouting, laughing, dogs barking. It was mayhem! We had chosen the weekend when there was the annual "Challenge" race up the West Highland Way - 95 miles in 35 hours. Registration from 4:30 with a 6 am start. Won't do that again - the next one is on 25th May.

Sorry - wrong race - the one that starts from Tyndrum is the "Devil o' The Highlands Footrace" - 42 miles in 12 hours. Saturday 3rd August.

A neighbour of ours was going up towards Wick one summer with his son for a motorbike event, they were a bit late getting away from work so part way up the A9 pulled into an empty yard - they couldn't really see in the dark but the gate was open and the notice said it was a gritting salt yard.

At some very early time in the morning the first goods train went past and blew the whistle long and loud - and woke them. They had managed to park as close to the line as they could have got without actually being on rail property, and beside a level crossing where "whistle" was mandatory! Apart from that it was a good stop :)

At least they got on the road again early and made it to the event with time to spare :) :)

PS We have found that council parking officers are very helpful if you phone and ask where you can park and park overnight in towns. I know many say better to apologise after the event but why upset anyone and spoil it for others? Outside built up areas parking and overnighting isn't much of a problem if you are considerate and sensible. If you park at businesses (shops, pubs, restaurants) always buy something, give a good impression.

We live, and tour, in Scotland. Have been members of both clubs for a long time. Costs are minimal.

We are, or more precisely she is, fussy and rarely book in advance, irrespective of wherever we go at home or abroad.

Both "Club Sites" are usually very good, although we feel CMC and a tad better than CCC in general.
We "did" NC500 in Sept and couldn't get onto a couple of them, as they were full.

CLs and CSs vary in all manner of ways: I think in 13y of MHing (and decades of camping/caravanning) we have only booked 3 such sites without visiting them first.

Join both clubs and have plenty of choices, if you are like us.

Wild camping is quite easy up there. Consider Search4Sites and CamperContact as useful sources of info.

We wild camped mainly in scotland but as members of the ccc we were able to fill up with water; empty cassette [could have used the washing machines showers and hook up for an hour or two] for a minimal fee at any of the club sites . cl or cs type camping is everywhere in scotland- wild!

I would leave it untill you are up there you can join on the spot if you need to and a lot of cl's cs won't bother to ask or suggest you take an application form and fill it in later!!!

Going to Scotland this club

either hand :)

Join neither, you would be better of joining "Scottish motorhome Wildcampers on Face book instead, has loads of info including good sites too and its free !!

Agree .... easpecially as most sites closed over winter. Plus you can park right on beach. We’re new to this lark, only done 2 weekends so far and both seafront. I love it! (y)

But we’ve joined both clubs. CAMHC paid for itself with discount on ferry ticket. I want to try Club sites and CL type to see what we like best. I’m guessing CLs.

In the Highlands look at a place, you can virtually stay there, if not there will be a place nearby, even Inverness, stay under the bridge and look out for Dolphins. Dozens of places on west coast to stay with fantastic views, water can be had at petrol stations, though they are few and far.
My favourite places are Knockan Crag, Firemore Sands, Achiltibuie, Kylesku Bridge, Torridon, Loch Maree, all within 2 hours of me and free with views.
