Best Buy: Joseph Joseph Can-Do Compact Can Opener Cheapest price: £12 available at Dunelm. Also available at Joseph Joseph and Amazon Extra features: Single-press button for releasing the lid Pros: Very easy to use for right or left-handers, compact design, easy to open tins, effortless disposal of lids, easy to clean Cons: Hard to fault but a few visible mould lines on the plastic from manufacturing Our verdict: We think this nifty little device is the king of can openers. It elicited whoops of delight from our panel of researchers conducting our tin opener test. It slices through tins easily, with minimal effort needed to twist the top to get the blade to bite, and then slice around the top of the can. It also securely holds the lid of the tin after you’ve cut it, so it's easy to dispose of lids too and it means you don't risk cutting your fingers. It's very compact and will fit in even the busiest of drawers, and it’s easy to clean too. Every researcher said they'd purchase this tin opener over any of the other manual ones we tested.

Not being one for tinned food, the few things I do buy all come with the ring pull lids these days?

Guess it depends what you buy - we have a few that need opener & then there's always the times that the ring pull breaks off!

Having not tried this opener yet (have bought one now from the eBay link above :giggle:) despite the glowing Which? review I'm not saying it is the best ever but worth a try & thought some may like it.

We like the butterfly type can opener (modern version with thicker handles and 'turning' bit) which cuts the lid out from the inside of the tin rather than some of the other type that cut the top of the tin and the sides off as these one are lethal as they are so sharp and you can cut yourself easily even when using a spoon etc to get the contents out.

For the camper I've got a smaller version of a butterfly one which only needs one hand to work it as it clamps on as you turn the 'butterfly' handle, similar to this sort of thing but a more ergonomic design, being small it doesn't take up much space but works perfectly.

Just to add - not wishing to knock Womble's efforts to get us all to spend, spend, spend :giggle: on all these gadgets etc - that I find using a side twizzle opener much easier than a top one as the former is a more 'natural' position for my hand when twisting.

When this sort of 'chop the whole top off the tin' ones first came out we bought one as it was supposed to be the bees knees and much better than butterfly ones but it soon ended up in the bin when hubby badly cut his hand on the tin afterwards when he picked it up to throw it away, one consolation though is if you want to use the tin to cut our pastry etc shapes afterwards it's perfectly sharp for the job! :giggle:
