I have a mate who due to ill health is thinking of selling his motorhome and is undecided whether to go down the dealer route or try to sell privately. the problem he has is, he has spent circa 15k on extras. which i do not think he will get a return via a dealer
the van is a 2016 Autotrail Delaware 150bhp 18,000 miles New cam belt and water pump fitted April 2021, 4 new Vanco Camper tyres fitted March 2022
the list of extra is:
Vanbitz Strikeback alarm system, Metatrak immobiliser, Oyster Cytrac Satelitte dish, Truma Habitation air conditioning, Alpine MH sat nav dab radio, Permanent view rear camera, LNB towbar with13 pin electrics, Gas lo system 2x11kg bottles, Rear air suspension with on board compressor, 2x100 ah Lithium batteries, Victron BMS,MPPT, B2B Charger, 2000 watt inverter, HP Hydraulics self-levelling jacks.

as you can see its fully loaded and in immaculate condition, with full service and hab check history. What do you think is a realistic asking price in todays market

He will get more for it selling privately but may have to put up with a load of time wasters.
Going direct to a dealer the price offered will vary some will be fair some will offer a silly low price.
My mate advertised his van privately this was a couple of years ago, a dealer contacted him and offered a really good price. With the current shortage of vans that could easily happen so worth advertising privately first.

Give Simon-Alan Kerr a shout he appears to be a fair dealer with a good rep.

Dealer price will usually include a warranty so to expect what a dealer gets for a private sale isn’t realistic in my mind. However, I have seen some right rubbish selling for very high prices. Not sure the demand is still there like it was six to twelve months ago though.
Depends if they want to sell or just try and get as much as possible and get loads of time waster I guess. Look what dealers are selling at and price two or three grand below without the extras. If an interested buyer wants them negotiate a price otherwise remove them and sell separately.

Then sell on commission basis via a reputable dealer with agreed terms up front etc

Demand is higher now with fewer vans for sale so you might get a taker who knows what they want.

I tried to sell an AutoTrail Savannah a few years back and had no interest in my private ads. Tried Motorhome Depot who achieved nothing but tried to sting me with costs, watch the small print if you try a commission sale!

I'd get a valuation from a dealer and try and sell privately for that plus whatever seems reasonable. Sadly I don't think he will get anywhere near what hes spent on extras back I suppose as a buyer why would you unless they're exactly what you want and the warranties are transferrable.

Just sold mine through Motorhome Dept. They deal with everything including insurance for test drives can arrange a warranty, finance etc plus safe transfer of the sale price to your bank account, yes they put there fee on top but with all the scams and tyre kickers out there it was worth it.Sold in 9 days for price I was expecting.

I had a good experience with them too. Sure I maybe could have got more going pvt but to be honest I just CBA these days. Tyre Kickers, scammers, dordlers, bullshiters, and general time wasters.

Another broker option is Mel Wilkins at Wilkins Motorcaravans near Stroud.
I can highly recommend him, that is where I bought mine from and you will be hard pressed to find a more honest, helpful and sincere person. He will charge approx £3k and provide full after sales service and warranty.

Just out of interest what sort of commission are Motorhome Depot asking for and what if any extra charges are being asked for, like safe transfer of funds to your bank account, insurance for any driver to test drive the van, any others we should know about etc.
Many Thanks for any qualified answers.

Hi Les. In our case it was 3k I don't know if there's a sliding scale depending on value but that's it, no add on extra to pay.

We bought from them and very pleased we are. The vendor got his money direct from us and they would have paid Motorhome Department his fee. In my case the vendor was a highly specialised sports car garage selling McLarens and the like but obviously could not sell the Motorhome they took in in part exchange for a Bentley without specialist help!

Interesting that the 'Trade' are using them.
