I'm a newbie
Hi just left a deposit on our 1st motorhome and wondered if there's any questions or things i should make sure I've asked and got clarity on before i drive it away/handed over our hard earned cash please? Also, any tips on buying a driveaway awning? Many thanks

make sure you get all the docs and user manuals and that you have a full understanding of how it all works and possible what is not working. and what is or is not covered if all is not well when you get home.

PS; before you buy any awning i would suggest you use the van, then you will have a better idea of what you want from an awning not what anyone else thinks is a good buy.

Make sure you know how much it weighs and what the payload is.

Ask what happens if you spot a problem. What is the process, how will it be handled, what is the time limits.

Ask the dealer if you can video the handover as there’s so much to remember, I’m sure they won’t mind as it stops you ringing back and asking questions on simple things you may forget.

You say you've left a deposit. So I'm assuming you are buying from a dealer. Who is the dealer? What is the make of the motorhome? Are you buying new or secondhand? If secondhand, is there any manufacturers warranty left? Come back with those answers and our advice can be more specific. Chances are you are buying secondhand from a dealer so some advice follows;

If it is secondhand, the two BIG issues. make sure there is no finance outstanding (Don't take the dealers word for this) Get it checked for damp. I've attached a checklist for you to use on collection of a secondhand van that should help. Any questions at all, come back and ask, if you want to verify anything the dealer says, come back and we'll tell you if he's telling the truth. Even if it means using your phone in the showroom, you'll get answers quick here.

Buying a van is an exciting time, and in the excitement it's easy to overlook things. Try and keep it calm and objective. Question everything and ask again if you don't fully understand.

Best of luck (y)

We are collecting our van on Friday and owing to Covid the whole handover is planned to be in the form of a video which we watch, and then can (I hope) ask questions about afterwards. On the plus side we get to keep it as a reference, on the down side it's probably going to be complicated leaning out of the window asking about some switch, connector or valve without necessarily being able to point to it.
