First of all my wife and I have bikes, but I’m not sure the cycle routes in Brighton and Worthing using up a carriageway are helping. The traffic is more chaotic at rush hour and with the high winds and rain we have had over the last couple of weeks there is not a cyclist to be seen. Is this happening in all our towns? I perhaps can understand London doing it as to travel in the LEM is now £200!

Have them around Chichester, absolute joke they have shut of one of the 2 lanes for a Covid cycle lane even though they also have their own cycle lane!!

Must have cost thousands, been around them about 5 times and not seen a cyclist yet.

Happening near us, lane taken our for cyclists, maybe 10 a day, chaos with all other vehicles in one lane.

This is going to be unpopular but I fully support cycle lanes everywhere. Cars are not the future and everyone needs to accept that things need to change.

After being knocked off my bike three times in a few weeks by inattentive car drivers, I no longer cycle to work and won’t until cycle lanes that are physically separated from traffic are there.

Alas it’s a chicken and egg scenario and in the meantime if you don’t want to sit in traffic, get a bike.

Wont get a bike (with peddles) too dangerous, as stated above.

Yes saw them last sat ! We got same problem in Southampton

Not at all dangerous, don't know where you get that idea from, if you are referring to the comment inattentive car drivers then that is not the bikes fault or even the cyclists.

Hi Gaga
As a fellow Worthingite, I concur. What a farce. Pollution levels will rocket as a result of the single lines of traffic In the rush hour. We have already stopped going to Morrison’s, Waitrose etc in town and I know of other people who have done the same. I saw the headlines of the Argus this am that Brighton have already scrapped within days of opening, some bike lanes along the front. Not sure of the veracity yet.

Re Googlebot’s comment. I have a bike as now recently retired but I would have found it impossible to do my job as a surveyor, with ladders, etc and the distance travelled on a bike.

I cycled out of Manchester the other day and only spent about a mile (out of 9) on the road with cars, loved it! having said that i run a firm with 5 vans and they are a bit of a pain in the whatevers with regard to traffic, but then i would blame that on the people driving their car for less than 2 miles on each trip

The problem arises when one Local Authority does it and the neighbouring one does not or as some others have said there already is a dedicated cycle track but some (Mamils) won't use them as they ride to fast for other cyclists using the paths and can't prowl in a multi coloured Tour de France pack and just slow enough in packs to cheese off other road users when on the highway! Yes I do cycle (motor and pedal) and remember a time when most A roads used to have dedicated cycle paths there was one from Preston to Lytham but that fell into neglect and only about 2 miles remains in use and that is deteriorating fast, The A6 had one from Preston through to Lancaster and beyond and that was lost to road widening! So perhaps the pop up cycleways are based on the old cycleways of pre motorway Britain?

Bit of a joke as once you get to the roundabouts the cycle lane ends!
Traffic was bad enough and now they’ve cut the capacity going through Chichester by 50%

Build them and they will come.....

People want to cycle to work but won't because the traffic is too close and too dangerous. Research shows that if cycleways are built away from the traffic people will use them in preference to driving a car. Can't expect people to start cycling and wait for the cycleways to be built.
More research shows that for every 1euro spent on cycling infrastructure you save 8euros in future medical care.
Cycling to work is the future.....just like it was for our grandparents!

Look out driving through Newbury & Thatcham on the A4 :o
Where they narrowed the road to add a cycle lane on the road (& NEXT to a separate cycle path for most of it) there are now bollards.

I do some cycling and driving but I mainly walk to places. Or at least I mainly used to walk but now that cyclists are allowed all over the pedestrian areas, including narrow footpaths, I hardly walk anywhere. Yesterday I was out and a new cycle path was empty because the cyclists were using the pavement. Cyclists rightly demand respect and regulation from vehicle drivers and I think that pedestrians should have respect and regulation from cyclists. Have not seen cyclists spending money in shops the way pedestrians do. There need to be 'walk your bike' signs in these city 'used-to-be pedestrian areas'. Dread the advent of electric scooters, we already have some speeding down the pavements.

So..........have all you lot who are complaining about this written to your MP and your local Council to try and improve the situation???

No? Thought maybe not.

One bad winter and all these cycle lanes will be unused. Joke in London atm.

I agree. What a waste of time and money.🤬
