New evening car park charges plan scrapped in council U-turn

EW evening car park charges until 8pm have been dropped by Dorset Council for now – although Sunday charges will still be introduced in many areas for the first time.

Dorset Council say they recognise that now is not the time to add the 6-8pm charge and by dropping it hope to help local businesses coming out of lockdown restrictions.

But for West Bay and Lyme Regis all-day charges in council owned car parks will now quadruple, rather than double as originally suggested – going up from £2 to £8.

Highways portfolio holder Cllr Ray Bryan says this will bring them in line with other seaside towns in Dorset. Both areas have not had an increase in the fee since 2014.
The decision, announced earlier in the year, to increase the charging period, led to an outcry from some business organisations, individuals, and several town and parish councils.

Charges to quadruple🙈
Blimey, and he’s me naïvely thinking that inflation is less than 2%!!

I would happily pay £8 to park overnight in station carpark west bay, used to be our favourite place.
I could fish all night and she felt safe being close and plenty to do.
Shame such a short sighted council.

Sounds like they want to get rid of the tourists. Our local beach car parks are £1.50 all day.

We used to drive down at least twice a month until the carpark was closed from 8pm and fines handed out. Luckily I bumped into the council woman with 2 policemen at 3am coming in off the beach, she told me to leave and park up the road and then proceeded to put fines on the other dozen vans.

In line with other Dorset towns, ie Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole and Weymouth. Much much bigger places with facilities and attractions lacking in the west of the county. They are pricing themselves out of the tourist business

I suspect that it's because Dorset is now governed by a single unitary authority and that it's bringing about a general levelling up. I find it very annoying as I was born and bred in West Bay / Bridport and Dorset Lady and I take every reasonable opportunity to visit that area and Lyme Regis especially. No more long leisurely winter walks and lunches there if we have to pay £8 to park on top of the bill. A lose, lose situation.

I am just amazed that it’s taken so long for car park charges to be raised as there has been no rise since 2014 at least. I strongly suspect that there will be much grumbling but that people who want to park will pay up anyway and less than £1 an hour? Let’s get real folks!
Footnote: let’s hope that you don’t have to use their hopeless pay by phone ap as I’m told it doesn’t work and I don’t have a phone that will do it.

A £1 per hour only works if you stay the full day. As the machines are set at present the choice is pay or don't stay whether you want 30 mins or 24 hrs.

I must admit I didn’t know that as I’ve never parked there as I usually go on my motorbike and park for free. After all, I only live 18 miles away and wouldn’t want to spend a full day at West Bay unless I did go fishing as there is not much else there (in my humble opinion).

My point exactly. We normally only visit Lyme for about three hours.

They seem to be trying to turn west bay into an urban carbuncle. Who designed that poultice of a buiding that starred as the police station in broadchurch and the other hidious things behind it. I could not believe it when I saw them, bloody awfull looking things and completely inappropriate for a national treasure of a seaside town like west bay. :(

You missed the really clever bit. If the sea breaches the defences the residents underground carpark floods. :ROFLMAO:
