A good initiative from the Caravan and Motorhome Club, this will help their staff recognise those who might need some additional support when camping. (y)

The Caravan and Motorhome Club supports Hidden Disabilities Sunflower for its guests with invisible disabilities

(22 August 2022) The Caravan and Motorhome Club has become an official supporter of the global network, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, for members and guests who may have an invisible disability and need additional support or help during their stay at any one of the Club’s campsites and pop-up campsites across the UK.

Globally, one in seven people live with some form of disability. While some experience a disability that is visible, a significant number of people have a non-visible disability, impairment or condition. Wearing the Sunflower lanyard or badge discreetly indicates to people around the wearer that they need additional support, help or a little more time.

Staff across all directly managed Caravan and Motorhome Club locations have received training and can provide badges or lanyards to give to members who require them. By joining the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network, it also allows the Club’s members and guests to find out the Access guides for campsites.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club’s head of strategic product development, Natasha Shane, comments: “Our staff and volunteers have received training and can access valuable information on the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower website to improve their wider awareness of supporting our members and guests in need of extra help. By becoming a member of the Sunflower we are reinforcing the message that our Club is inclusive and our members and guests are very important to us, enabling them to have the most comfortable stay wherever they may be holidaying.”

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was developed in 2016 to raise awareness of invisible disabilities, and to reduce judgement and increase support for anyone that needs it. People can choose to wear a lanyard that is clearly visible from a distance, featuring a Sunflower on a green background, which allows wearers to be subtly visible and encourages support and understanding from others.

Paul White, CEO, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, adds: “We are delighted that the Caravan and Motorhome Club have joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower global network. The Club is the embodiment of adventure and holidays. Now that they are part of the Sunflower network it means that Sunflower wearers with non-visible disabilities will be able to experience these memorable adventures and enjoy a break away from home.”

The Sunflower is now recognised globally ranging from retail transport including 130 airports, UK rail networks, travel, tourism and over 450 universities, schools and colleges.

Not knocking it but they are about 2 years behind the curve. This has been about and then abused during the pandemic as you can simply buy them on ebay or amazon and use as an excuse not to follow covid advice :-(

No, not two years... aeons behind, this was well established a long time before Covid knocked on everyone's door, and as Covid mania seems to have receded significantly, hopefully more people will recognise the sunflower an at least pause and think before pouncing...

Cheers

Indeed that would be nice, hard though when you meet someone who borrowed one from their mother in law so that didn't have to wear a mask in a hospital because they don't believe in covid.

How would you know that the person wearing one NOW, TODAY was wearing one because they didn't believe in Covid???

Please, let's move on, stop looking back, and support something that was (and still is) a great initiative..!

I've got one. Following my stroke, I often struggle with speech and using the correct words. Some shops have obviously had training and home in on you to offer help as soon as they spot you. Morrisons is especially good. The flip side of this is as pointed out, because they were easy to get during covid a lot of people got them just so they didn't need to wear a mask.

We got them for our boys.

However, despite being a great idea, better publicity is needed. People still scowl when my boys use the disabled Radar khazi.

We scowl back and often say something. rather rude.

Just get a "BIGGER SUNFLOWER", with a length of scaffold pole in the stem, for the Adults :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:(y)

I'm joking... ;)

I agree, better publicity IS definitely needed, as is acceptance, as shown by some of the posts above...

I too think it got a bad name in covid times. Maybe it needs something with tighter regulation to identify people affected

They should have said if you were unable to wear a mask it would be safer for you to place an order from outside the shop and wait while someone fetched it. Sorry to hear about your family.

So apparantly my original reply was too much, even though i self censored my swears.
Long story short, the idiot that said it NOW, TODAY, said it to my face. That's how I know.
Good enough for you?

I didn't think they had to be worn in hospitals now? Seriously, I did think they'd stopped us having to wear them and had stopped providing them for patients?

I feel so sorry for you, still wrapped up (in one way or another) in the mess that the scaremonger's created, perhaps, if we ever meet face to face I can give you a great big "man hug", or maybe not, I might be carrying any number of diseases ... ;)

Back to the subject then... eh...?

The idea has been around a while and yes it’s a shame some peaple abused the system. But we can all move on and stop looking back and help those that need help which is more important. (y)

I still had to wear one to The Conquest Hospital, Hastings, my last visit was just over a week ago. They have dispensers by every door, Not all staff wear them though!

I had to wear one 3 weeks ago for my routine mammogram, happy to do it. All clear thank goodness. Always an anxious time as Mum was only 45 when she got it and died at 55.

The Sunflower system might not be perfect and it did get derailed a bit by Covid but I’m sure it will get back on track again now. There will always be people who take advantage of systems, especially voluntary ones but if it helps people who need it overall then great. Stop moaning and spread the word to family and friends who might benefit.

Hospitals still contain a lot more people unable to have vaccination and likely to suffer severe illnesses than the general population. It's sad that the I'm all right Jack crowd don't give a toss even for a minor inconvenience. Is it because they're selfish or not that bright?

I really hate selfish people truly cannot understand their thinking.

I'm not even going to try and explain or debate with any of the it's all over move on brigade. i've spent a hell of a lot of time trying to educate and debate with that thinking. Thats for a another time and another forum.

Returning to sunflower lanyards yes they are a great idea , yes they are open to abuse like many other good things.
The real underlining issue in all this which for many is too unfordable to see. Is the sad fact that society can't accept people who are different to them. Who sadly feel the need to have a sunflower lanyard in order to be accepted.

They are good for what they were intended. all schemes get abused.
Woman who worked in a local shop got one from a customer, an ex colleague of mine who now has mental health as well as mobility issues,
Few months later was in the shop and heard the assistant was very poorly in hospital with covid.
Karma?
She did recover, she was working in there today.

Oh so you're implying that covid is not a risk in the hospital I work at ? I'll inform the management

Oh how easier it is to mock than take time to learn the real facts sadly you can't get though to a closed book. Covid close up is not pretty and working around it is no ball game in the park for sure. 👊

Yeah I know that, I've been nursing through the whole thing.
