Pet owners are being warned about a spike in cases of a bug that causes prolific vomiting in dogs.

The condition, which causes profuse sickness, lethargy, diarrhoea, and blood in their stools, has recently affected dogs across North Wales.

But there are reports of similar cases around the UK.

It is known that some animals in North Wales have ended up in veterinary hospital as a result of the infection.

Vets in the region are asking pet owners to look out for signs of the life-threatening condition, which is believed to be hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

If left untreated, it could cause severe dehydration, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), or hypovolemic shock, which occurs when a dog’s blood or fluid levels drop dramatically.

You should contact your vet straight away if your dog is showing signs of the disease as it can be fatal.

A spokesperson for Mochdre Vets said: “We did see quite a lot of cases before Christmas, but it petered out.

“However, over the last two weeks, we have seen an increase again.

“We have had to have several dogs hospitalised following serious bouts of vomiting, with some dogs vomiting blood.”

A spokesperson for Vets Now in Wrexham and Colwyn Bay said: “Nationally, we are seeing around 165 cases of haemorrhagic gastroenteritis a month in dogs at the moment.

I read online that a dog died after swimming in Elbury ( also called Elberry) Cove, Paignton. Similar symptoms and it was thought to be caused by the dog ingesting either blue- green algae or palm oil washed up into the cove.
