Don't own one yet
Hi newbie here . I'm looking to buy a 1998 vw winnebago rialta. It's an import from the states .does anyone have any experience with these. It's a 2.5 petrol manual with a 5 speed gearbox . I've come from vw t4 t5 campers but looking for something with a bit more room. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks .Andy 😊

I have had 2 of the ealier models on the renault traffic base van but not the VW.
You would be very wise before purchase to check chasis underneath .They do rust under the plastic panels/fibreglass.
check the weight as they must run close to max weight with the body they have.

Thanks for info I'll have a good look underneath. With the weight in mind and being 2.5 petrol what would be mpg on this. Thanks again it's very helpful and very much appreciated 😀

Check its MOT history here:

18 to 22mpg for petrol according to this review of a '96 model

I wouldn't have thought it to be very good. The 2,5 in the ordinary van when used with the auto box was frightening if driven briskly.

You could convert to lpg if doing lots of miles? 75p/l iirc?

Cheers James

You do know it will be LH drive?.....Ideal for European hols...less so for the UK......New parts might be a bit pricey too.

Hi is it the one on ebay for over £14,000
The rear seating isnt original cushions look like vynil and you will sweat a lot.
The aluminium corners look sharp
Outside strips look new.
do check for rust underneath.
all the above are no reason not to buy it.
Just look in all tha awkward places.

Would you not be better off with a T4 / T5 coachbuilt esp if used mainly in UK?

Just a thought?

I've never seen a T5 coach-built.

There was a T4 WINNEBAGO knocking around on the island not so long ago. I wonder if it's still here. I am sorry to say I thought it looked a bit weird. Certainly unusual.

There used to be a guy at vanfest with a rialto, interior parts were rare, I'm sure he was on the T4 forum but that was over a decade ago
As for T5 coachbuilts

I wasn't saying there weren't any. I was just saying I had never seen one.

I agree rare as rocking horse.......

Try the VW T4 Forum, there may be someone on there who knows a bit about the Rialta. If you are a Facebook user you could do worse that asking Stan Wohlfarth who is a very knowledgeable VW workshop owner and enthusiast in the States.

Are you sure it's a 2.5 petrol and not a 2.8 V6? I thought most were built on the T4 with a version of the VR6 2.8 engine similar to that in the Golf, Corrado etc. of the period.

I am the one that owns this rialta that was on eBay ,the seating area I converted from a fixed bed,had it professionally upholstered at great expense with, like with any bed you put an under sheet down first🙄,this is my second one and in my opinion are better than the uk coach builds,as it’s got all the Winnebago extras,
Mpg wise I’m getting 20/25…and actually much better on the motorways.
Because I mostly use Irvin the uk I’m converting it to right hand drive to:))
