Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
Good evening everyone. :)

It's that time again for us (two years down the line) when I need to look for another VPN provider.
Slick VPN which we were using, didn't allow us to view BBC Programmes abroad, yet allowed all other UK programme channels via their own catch up Apps, of via other catch up Apps.

Looking through the Top Ten Best VPNs, most but not all appear to support the BBCiPlayer and Netflix.

The one I am looking at is Surfshark, which offers the same as others, for a lower monthly cost.

Does anyone else use Surfshark, or have experiences of an alternative, allowing connection to the BBC iPlayer?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We use Nord vpn. Googled it and got a specific channel to log onto for iPlayer - everything else just worked in France and Spain in February. I’m sure the channel will have changed by now, but as fast as it does, some young whipper snappers hacks it! Nord has an app on Firestick, & a special offer on at the moment - 3 years and 3 months extra free - think it was about £110?

What’s a VPN please, heard it mentioned to do with flags on Avatar, but no idea what it is or do I need one?

It routes your internet traffic through another address for privacy, and also so sites think you are in the UK for instance when you are abroad.

They used to be needed if you wanted to watch BBC on iPlayer outside the UK but if you use a UK purchased sim card this isn't needed any more. :)

A Virtual Private Network David, used as described by the contributors above. Ideal if you are on a good WiFi signal when abroad, which is what I'd be using it for.

At home some folks like to protect their online identity, giving them an additional level of security.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hi Jock
I've just started using SurfShark and find it good. I use a manual IKEv2 connection rather than their app, which is something I found hard to find at a decent price
Cheers

i am currently using surfshark and it seems ro do everything it says on the tin !

i was watching some american programmes the other day through a US app that would only work when i set the connection to a US connection. it worked brilliantly, so its a thumbs up from me for surfshark

When we were in Portugal recently I was using a NoS data sim. As we were only there for a few weeks I tried loads of free VPN's. Vpnify was the one that worked a treat, they do a paid version as well so might be worth a look.

I’m looking into this at the moment for the Firestick and most recommend Express vpn and more specifically IPVanish designed for the fire stick...

JockandRita i would google a vpn more specific to what device your going to watch on...??

Thanks all for your helpful and informative replies so far. Much appreciated (y)

I hardly use the Firestick and Kodi these days Garry, so it would only be for BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, ALL4 and MY5, ........................... where I am not getting a decent enough data signal on my UK Vodafone 100Gb a month sim card. ;)

I'd like to point out at this stage, that if I've got anything to do with it, I'll be too busy socialising to find time to watch TV. However, on cold dark, wet, and windy nights, it's handy to have, and, it helps to keep the peace. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hi Jock, just swapped to Express VPN having been with Pure VPN for a while.....works fine...Firestick, BBC, ITV etc......so far so good....currently working here in Espana...

Jock, depending on your comfort zone I would look at what router you use at home. I am not able to provide a list of suitable ones save many of the current Netgear offers.
Here is a description of how to set it up.
You can then use client apps on Windows or Android. This becomes a free lifetime VPN. It also provides you with in effect a link onto your home network so you can even access devices on that network whilst roaming.
Admitedly it is not for everyone but costs nothing to try if you have a router that will play.

Jock, We use Hotspot Shield $30 a year, it's limited to 5 devices, but have no problems with iPlayer etc when using the UK server, large choice of locations, For a laugh I'm using Nepal for now, it should change the flag on my avatar.
See you both in the New Year.
Cheers
Ed

I didn’t know what VPN was either so now I know if I’m in Europe anyone in U.K. won’t know where I am? Is that correct?
Is it needed if I use our MiFi or my data or is it purely for if you are on a public WiFi?

As DBK says if you have a UK SIM card in your phone or MIFI then you don,t need a VPN, I use a Amazon Fibre stick to watch UK TV when in Spain and can watch Virgin TV to GO when abroad

Lots of tv sites don’t want you to access them if you’re not in the UK, and if you are using site WiFi etc they can tell from the IP address where you are, so block you. A VPN gives you a UK is address (or any country you choose if you want to watch US site for example), so the sites think you’re in the UK. As previously mentioned, if you are using a UK SIM card, such as 3 or Vodafone etc then it’s not necessary, as these give a UK is address any way.

Careful Michaela telling people how to set up a real VPN rather than use a Micky Mouse app. I've set up a few for customers when broadband first came out, used to be proper fun and games then.

Lots to look at and consider. :whatthe:

Thank you all for your contributions to the thread. Hopefully others not sure about VPNs, gained useful info too (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I dont know if this is still relevant, But back in 2013. I wanted to watch the UK Rugby League Challenge cup whilst in the USA. I used "Identity Cloaker" which allowed me to access BBC programmes and i-player?. My DIL, has a similar programme which she uses to watch UK "soaps"!.

Is there a limit on usage when out of the UK?

Shrimp, I've just noticed that you don't appear to have had a response to your question.
AFAIK, when you use a VPN, it effectively hides your identity, your actual location, and activity from those who might wish to know that info, ie, Google, advertisers, and scammers, etc. You don't necessarily need one, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread, it does give you a greater level of protection and security. As before, we will use it outside the UK, if on a decent WiFi signal, to access UK sites, eg, our GP's online Patient Access site wouldn't allow me to make appointments, prior to our return home from Spain last year, but as soon as I used my VPN choosing a UK server location, I got straight through with no problem. Also useful for online banking protection at any time or location, and when using open or public WiFi, such as provided at Wetherspoons, etc. I always use a VPN in those circumstances................when on WiFi.
With your UK data sim, there isn't the same risk when doing online banking, and access to UK websites is as normal.

Is there a limit on usage when out of the UK?
I think I am correct in saying that Three impose a 19Gb cap per month, with Vodafone imposing a 25Gb cap per month, on their unlimited plans. Those with a limit of 50Gb or 100Gb per month with Vodafone, can use all of that if they wish, anywhere in the 48 countries listed, which includes the whole of the EU.

HTH,

Jock. :)

I use ipvanish, which works well for me. I think they have a black friday offer on at the moment.
