Very Confused - I have recently been to Germany and viewed some wonderful Possl camper vans. I am considering importing a new one to the UK, as my main use will be on the Continent. I am so confused about the new tax laws as they apply to new camper vans. The model I am looking at, has a 2.2 Citreon Relay diesel engine which is classed as a Euro 6d. Does anyone actually know what vehicle excise duty I will pay at the point of first registration? Is it cheaper before the 1/4/20?

I do not think you are alone in not knowing what is going on. Perhaps someome will enlighten us both.

Greetings peeps from West Kent

:hiya:
The reading of this webpage would seem to say that the new VED rates began 1 September 2019 and that a 6engine would be in the high rate bracket.
However, it is a motorhome sales site so exercise caution.

There's people on here who are much better qualified to answer your question than me but, if you're insuring it in the UK, then IMO the insurance agent will probably want to insure and value it against a UK RRP price which, in itself, will take it over the luxury tax threshold. This also implies that your first registration cost will be circa £2,135 or something similiar.

Also, the German VAT is 19% and ours is 20% so you'll have to make a slight adjustment for that too.

I wait to be corrected entirely.

I've just picked up a new 'van, and whilst the dealer swallowed it, the first registration fee was the quoted £2135. I am assuming I will be paying the increased annual rate.

The 'tax' is broken into 2 sections: the 'road' tax is the based on the emissions, the 'luxury' tax is the other and is based on the cost - AFAIK the below is correct:
  1. Emissions tax: you will STILL have to pay the new (road) tax rate as it will have the emissions info on the COC and be classed as a M1SP vehicle.

  2. Luxury tax: if it is below the £40,000 threshold it should NOT be liable for the new luxury car tax (paid from year 2) BUT that figure is based on the overall total cost including any extras fitted by the supplying dealer and UK VAT.

You will therefore end up paying no 1. but may be able to avoid no 2.

Good luck!

Not true ... the insured value has nothing at all to do with road tax rates etc. Our MH cost us £85,000 plus no more than another £3,000 for the tracker, semi-air suspensions and a few other bits but it is insured for £95,000 (excluding contents) as that is REPLACEMENT value (new for old) - the insurer knows all of this and it is they who asked what it would cost to replace. They never once asked about the road tax or weight.

Ah, but I don't feel bad at all Mel because I put the caveat at the bottom "I await to be corrected entirely".

At the end of the day if you are spending between 50-100k or more will a couple of grand stop you buying it, I don't think so.

Agree bleeding annoying but it won't stop you getting the van you want.

Its the extra £320 luxury tax a year for 5 years too though Lenny (plus the £145 road tax) so you have to allow for that in your running costs, its not so much the cost, which is bad enough, but the plain stupidity of the new tax rules for ALL new vehicles ... supposedly they want us to have more eco-friendly vehicles but then put a large tax hike on them which encourages you NOT to buy them!

Personally I think it's some muppet in government who hasnt a clue , so if your buying a new motorhome with the latest euro engine which is more eco friendly than they have ever been the charge you stupid amounts of tax but if you drive a 17 year old motorhome the tax is normal , is it just me are the newer engines not more eco friendly with the ad blue additive ????? Just a way of making money I'm thinking
