Good morning all.

Has anyone been to recently and have any updated information/advice for visiting Versailles and Fontainebleau. We are going over next Friday with no plan and 3 months wandering. These 2 places are at the top of the list the other half would like to visit.

Specifically parking/overnighting advice of our 7.5m motorhome hopefully within walking distance.

Thanks in advance

Hi we went 3 years ago stayed on the huttopia site https://europe.huttopia.com/en/contact-camping-versailles/
It’s not to far from the palace we were in 7m MH and found all was ok
Re Versailles we did the Gardens in the morning. The palace seems to be quieter in the late afternoon after all the coach tours have gone
It really is an amazing place to visit
Enjoy the trip

Thanks for the advice Adam (y)

a few miles from Fontainebleau along the Seine you have the camping communal de Samoreau. The castle is well worth a visit, the garden isn't anything special but inside it's one of the best furnished castle in France. Nice walks in the forest near the gorges de Franchard.

We stayed there too and it was fine (although quite expensive). We took a short bus ride to Versailles. It had only just reopened after lockdown when we went so very quiet but we’ve heard too that it is better to do the gardens in the morning and the inside later in the day when the coaches have gone.
You will have a great time 👍

We have always parked here for Fontainebleau.
Far enough away from the road for no noise and 100 m or so to the garden

We also did Camping Huttopia. There is a tourist office on left as you go towards Versailles, guy in there explained about getting either early or late. We cycled up to the Palace, but locked our bike up at Hotel de Ville then crossed the road. We went in May 2019, site reception closed for lunch ...we asked for ACSI pitch....yes but you will have to move after first night to another pitch...argued that one....
Site is only 8 minutes walk to station for trains direct to Paris

You still have to book tickets for Versailles. We only know this because we tried 3 weeks ago when we were staying with friends who live an hour away. They only had late afternoon tickets left so we would have only had a couple of hours there which wouldn’t have been enough.

I went to Versailles a few weeks ago, the only show in town for nearby off road moho parking is paid parking Europe, I read in camper contact some people overnight there. There is no moho parking at the Versailles official car parks & if you get in the parking attendants will kick you out...pronto!!
We stayed at camping Huttopia, it was the Dutch week holiday & my visit started with a football slamming against my van & went downhill from there, as there were a lot of ferral Dutch children on site. The camp itself has a lot of low trees & dirty uneven pitches, but is probably tolerable when its not in Lord of the flies mode. Versailles itself was a bit of a dissapointment because it was just so rammed with tourists, but of course the gardens are less so & I wanted to see the hall of mirrors for decades.
We also have been to Fontainblau on the same trip, different kettle of fish, we found some parking for mohos on the main avenue as you go into town, & could be free depending on the day you go (ask the locals). It was not clear to me if the parking was still limited duration, but I stayed anyway with no probs! Much less touristed, seemed richer in artifacts, decor, grandure, everything !! we walked around much of it on our own, overall a much better visit. We stayed at Camping Les Prés - Aquadis Loisirs which actually turned out to be in a lovely little town with a river & ruined castle, for a relaxing day!!

If its any help we made the mistake of going to versailles in the van 7.5m , don't, parking is horrendous, find somewhere nice to stay and go in by metro or bus.
